Cheers Guys

Makes and interesting read! Its just every 1.6 16v ive come across ive left for dead (Sorry 1.6 boys no offence meant!) but they all seem to argue they can keep with valvers.

But that works out that a valver has about 30bhp per tonne more which is alot i think well all agree!

Ive got both, the 1.6 is pretty nippy, quicker than i expected, but its not in the same league as the valver by any means.

I think all 16v engines are DOHC?
I assumed this before but was proven wrong by someone on this forum, there are a few SOHC 16v engines but they are nowhere near as common as DOHC 16v engines, but yes the 1.6 16v is DOHC and 110 BHP as standard whereas the valver is 137 BHP as standard and 20 kg lighter which is nothing when you think that the driver could be 20kg heavier or could have 20kg more ICE, the weight is negligable the BHP isnt

  ex Clio 172 owner :(

Renault could have and should have gotten more power out of the 1.6, I get 130horses from my standard VTS (rare 130 model unlike the usual 120). If they had of, thered probably be less VTRs on the road as more people would have gone for the Clio. At the peak of the Saxos popularity there was only really the Clio 1.6 RSi out (roughly equivalent to the VTR performance wise) coupled with the Saxos free insurance meant more young uns went for the tin can.

The Valver will have a host of differences to do with gearing, torque spread and engine management that help make it different to drive. Remember that the 16V was, from 1991-93, Renaults homologation car for its flagship Group A rally exploits, using the 1764cc lump and most of the 16Vs bits. Today, the 1.6 16v Clio is used as the Super 1600 homologation car, but you have to admit theres a world of difference between the Super 1600 car and the 1990s Group A Clio (and Maxi version).

What are they then(genuinely interested)?Ive never heard of one cam operating 16valves before-unless it was on a straight 8;)

dont forget also renault want u 2 by there top of the range sports cars 172 172 cup 182 megane 225. so there only gonna give a little bit with the 1.6 they dont want that 1.6 catching there halmark.

unlike like citreon that dont really have a performance minded car ok the VTR/VTS but thats not really in the same field
