Which oil for my Mk2 172 please

I know there are probably old posts about this, but as I have now done a bit over 6,000 miles, it is time for a service and I just want to make sure that the right oil is used, so which is the right/best oil for the Mk2 172 please guys? I think the garage put in Mobil 1 at 3,000 miles but I want to check here first!!

well imo 3k was to early for fully synthetic. But id stick with that now its in.

Otherwise use the 10w-40 elf semi synthetic untill about 12k.

Well as Jon said, I also say that 3k miles is too early to swap to fully sythetic as the engine will not be fully bedded in yet...

Mines just coming up to 6k miles now and Im about to do the oil & filter for the first time.

The stuff that Renault use & recommend is 10W40 semi-synthetic and thats what I will be using!

Will probably switch to fully synth at 12k miles and run it on that from then on...

Dont want to be daft, but where can I get the Elf stuff from?

My local parts dept looked at me like I was a looney when I asked for some!

Any place local to Kingston in Surrey would be a great help...

Not many Renault garages actually sell or use the Elf stuff, and its not vital that you use that exact oil...

You need a "good" 10W40 semi-synthetic oil that conforms to the ACEA A3 standard, it says on the label on the back of the tub.

Nn fact my local dealer uses Total Quartz oil in their cars, so oils like Elf, Total, Castrol, etc... are fine, just look at the label for A3 spec!

ps - got this from lookers in altrincham for 2.99 a litre, though through circumstances beyond my control it worked out cheaper!!!!!

I had it put in mine after 1300 miles and I was well impressed. The car feels a lot smoother seems to pick up a little better and warms up a lot quicker. IMHO

Well, after only 1300 miles the engine will be nowhere near run in properly and now with fully synth in there it will take longer to bed in than normal...

Only ever use Millers oil nowadays . This was recommended to me from a friend who has been paid to try all the top oils on the market and settled on Millers .

If its good enough for him in a 600bhp+ 911 turbo race engine which costs around £15k upwards for a rebuild then Im sure its good enough for my Clio .

I wouldnt consider any of the cheaper oils as the oil temp on track can run up to 140 degrees c . If you wanted to use Mobil 1 your better going for the motorsport oil which is (I think) 10w50 . We dont really have a cold enough climate to warrant using a 0w40 oil .

If your up to 140 deg id be taking firm action now at active cooling, 120 is really the most you want to run.

And mobil, i personally find crap...expesive, poor thermal capacity and burns quick.

So what is the correct oil for my car in your opinion? Also considering that your dad has a Renault dealership, you will probably know the answer. Remember too, that unlike some guys here, that I do not take my car on a track and I am not into trying to do stupid speeds in it!!

I would imagine that every garage has a different idea of what oil certain cars should use. I dont want their bog standard stuff though!

Can´t get hold of Elf so i was wondering if Castrol formula RS 10w60 or 0w40 would be ok? Am going for a couple of trackdays this summer so i want an oil that can withstand high temps.

Ive been using 5w40 in my cup, as it recomends u use that in the service book...

Its a bugger to find tho!!
