Which Renaultsport Clio?

964

  Clio, 911, Cayenne
Hi Im looking for a Clio for a general run around and to do the odd track day.

Im pretty sure I should be going for a Cup version but which one? there are 2 versions of the 172 or I might just squeeze into a 182?

I have had a Trophy before but do not want to really spend that much money.

Budget is £3k.

Should I be looking for the lowest mileage car I can find?

Cheers

I'd be looking for the best example you can find rather than mileagae hunting...

If i was in your position i would look for a clean Ph1. In regards to miileage i wouldn't be too concerned aslong as it has full service history with all the belts done at the correct intervals.

  172 Ph1, Lupo GTI
just over £2k will get a very good Ph1 172 leaving funds for fixing niggles or modifying it.

Thanks, Ph1 it is.

I have just messaged one of the owners of a Ph1 on the For Sale forum.

Would you recommend an inspection seeing as I know nothing about Ph1 Clios?

It's never a bad suggestion to have a check on any car you're buying.

But it's not essential. There's nothing secret really. Have a look for all the obvious things like tyres/dents. Check the suspension. Engine mounts and exhausts are common things to go wrong.

Other than that, just be sensible about it really. There's a lot of them for sale, so it's not like you have to buy the first one you see.

Thanks Revels.

So for use on the track are the standard brakes with upgraded fluid and pads good enough?

I have a nice set of Recaro SPG's to go in so should reduce the weight a tad.

Gotta say I love the Racing Blue colour, did 172's come in this colour?

Good seat choice. SPG's are great.

No 172's did not come in RB.

No, Racing Blue was 182's only.

I think for track it completely depends what you want to do. The car will be fine and you'll enjoy it as standard as it comes. But then you might decide after one go that it needs better suspension/brakes/tyres etc.

But if you're mentioning changing seats already, then I think you'll probably end up changing it all! :D

Brembo HC discs and DS2500 pads, coupled with some braided lines are more than enough for the Clio, even on track.

Stick the the Ph1 172. Cable throttle, lighter, better ratios and cheaper. Loads more fun for a track car than a Ph2, non-Cup.

Im trying not to mod this car :) having said that R888 and decent hoses/fluid/pads will be a must.

Titanium is a fantastic colour anyway.

Iceburg Silver was on the last year of production, and is more bluey.

Thanks for this, just the sort of info I was looking for.

Is the WIlliams worth considering?

Not if you value your wallet.

The same enjoyment can be had from the Ph1, and it won't demand the same attention.

On your budget, I'd stick to the newest, best condition Ph1 you can find.

Pay attention to whether the cambelt has been changed, and also the dephaser (VVT regulator) as they rattle when they wear and are not part of a cambelt replacement schedule.

Also, Ph1's rear arches are prone to collecting salt/road crap in the lips, so watch for bubbles.

Engine mounts wear and can cause the exhaust manifold to knock on the subframe in the lower gears. A full set is £200+, plus fitting.

Thanks Christopher, much appreciated.

If anyone has a nice Ph1 they want to sell please PM me.

No worries. I still miss my Ph1.

You'll love it.

964 owner? Any pictures?

If it's an RS, you're my new hero.

Im really excited about getting a Clio!

Yes a 964 owner, I have been a serial Porsche owner for a few years now... 996Turbo, 996 GT2 and now my favorite the 964.

So Im even more puzzled, i like the look of the black ph1 in the for sale section however for a 1k more I could have the Blue car with brembos (although 260miles away)

if im going to go to 4k then I could have this which I love the colour http://pistonheads.com/sales/2288751.htm

There is also a very well priced 172 cup with 74k right on my doorstep.

when I have money to spend Im so impatient, when Im helping a mate buy a car Im much more cautious.

Zero service history mate. Someone brought it up in another thread. I'd avoid it.

I'll swap the above with you for your 964 though? I'm generous like that. ;)

Joking aside, I'd stick to the Ph1's. Just keep a lookout.

Let me finish the 964 first ;)

Ive found a Silver ph1 in the For sale section being sold by Ian, only 50K miles!

Im keen! if I could view and see that its not been bent (im sure it has not) Id probably have it.

If he was within an hour of me I probably would have been over there by now.... snow permitting.

Heres the dilema.... buy the lovely car with Brembos for more than I want to spend.

Or

Buy the Silver ph1 with 50k miles on it and spend:

700 brakes
700 suspension
300 exhaust
£££ bushes
£££ other

which will be around 4k once I have finished with a bit of labour.

Always more rewarding doing the work yourself, which, by the looks of it, you know already or you wouldnt be doing the work on the 964 which is lovely by the way!

Thanks!

This started out as 'I will buy something that I will not mod' but that does not look like it will last long.

We are trying to save for our next house.... need something fairly low maint.

  Iceberg 172

£4k for this with those mods is a bloody bargain... it's the sale of the f**king century!

Honestly, you will spend at least £1500 on Suspension and Brakes (inc fitting and setting them up etc) easily. That's already got that so you're basically getting the car for £2500!!! (that's how I justify buying this sort of car to my mrs anyway!).

You'll end up spending another £1500 on an Induction setup, Exhaust, New mounts / bushes, Remap...

So, tell the mrs (or yourself!) it's only costing you £1000 for the actual base car!!!!!
