Which was Cheaper when new: 172 or 172 Cup?

  Renault ClioSport Cup MK2
Just a quick question guys.

Which car was cheapest when new; was it the 172 or the 172 cup?

I've been having a look on ebay and most refer to the Cup as the cheap and nasty alternative to the fully loaded 172. I'm assuming they are sayng this just to promote their 172.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

The Cup's RRP was cheaper.

It's just them trying to sell it. Cup owners would put down it as the real hot hatch, not the girly soft version.

Just don't ask which one is better

yeah, no AC, no Xenons, no spare, less sound proofing, no ABS and no leather..... hence the cheaper price.

Some dealers were selling the Cups off cheap.Got mine in March '04 for £10.5k new.It had only done 17 miles but was pre-registered by Reno

The Cup. AFAIK some people paid the FRRP for the Cup because Renault said it was a true limited edition.

They sold off the 172's cheap too when the 182 came out in early 2004.

I looked at the Cup and full version when i was looking to get a 172. The Cup was cheaper due to the lack of xenons, leather etc etc.

The Cup is more of a drivers car but the full version had more options. I went for a normal 172 coz liked the toys.

I just got my cup, obviously second hand. And to be honest i dont miss having toys/leather etc. It makes it less hard to modify it with bucket seats and stuff like that, as if i had leather i wouldnt want to take it out.

Plus i also prefer the looks of the cup with the wheels and the spoilers etc.

A friend has the full fat version, and i just dont think it stands out enough compared to the base models, although it is still a lovely car.

Going from one to the other though, you can certainly tell the suspension set up is a lot stiffer in the cup. its bone rattling compared to the full fat, lol.

But that makes me smile even more when driving it.

Xenons are the only thing I would have wanted from the full fat 182. Perhaps the seats too.

Quite ironic really. The Cups were cheaper, but I bet when the time comes to sell them, they will retain their value better than an equivalent age/miler standard 172.

I doubt the same will happen to the 182 and the 182 Cup though as the 182 Cup arguably isn't as 'hardcore' as the 172 Cup. Wasn't the 172 Cup lighter than the standard model by a massive 90kg or something?

The other thing that could blur the resale values of the 182 and 182 Cup is the arrival of the Trophy. You want a lard ass all-singing, all dancing 182 - just get the full phat (and standard) version. Want the hardcore experience - then get a Trophy. Where that leaves the 182 Cup is anyone's guess....:p

I think the 172 cup was 70kg lighter, which is effectively a small passenger. Im 85kg and thats 13.5 stone roughly, so that gives you an idea of the weight loss.

the cup is very basic though, even more so than the dynamique versions of the clio. they dont have auto lights or wipers, it doesnt even come with a fag lighter.

But again, this all makes it less of an issue for me when i can afford to get proper bucket seats and harnesses in, etc.

Dynamiques were high-spec standard Clios with a slightly sportier set-up, the Extreme is the basic one iirc.

Do you have an uber-stripped Cup?! My Cup has a cigarette lighter and auto-wipers. Admittedly there is no way of getting the interior light on without opening the door, but thats part of the fun!

the cup is actually 89kg lighter but who's counting....

Indeed, quite a few differences that often are not noticed when comparing a Cup with a FF...

Profile 3mm lower
Front bumper with additional lower section
Enlarged rear spoiler above hatch
Greater downforce
Revised suspension
Higher front spring rates
Firmer ride
Front track 20mm wider
New wheel rim offset
Overall weight reduced by 89kg
Spare wheel removed (replaced by 2 anti-puncture inflators)
Air conditioning removed
Side airbags removed
Xenon headlamps removed
Sound deadening adapted
Braking system redesigned without ABS
Front castor angle increased by 3°
Rear track 10mm wider
16"x7" Speedline 'Turini' alloy wheels

Clio's really suffer from good ones and bad ones, a really good FF 172 will keep up with a cup. Btw I have owned both and settled on the my 'really good' FF172, the interior is well worth more to me than those alloys and spoiler.

Of the two at the time the cup really stood out with the colour and wheels. It was a true drivers car compaired to the 172 full fat and weighed 70-80kg's less. The 182 cup im sure was a marketing ploy because it only weighs 20kg less and was jumping on the back of the original...

Profile 3mm lower
Greater downforce (sales pitch it makes no difference)
Revised suspension (you can set a fll fat up with the setup its little different)
Front track 20mm wider (only chnages were different offset wheels which is a few mm 6mm total or so I think)
Front castor angle increased by 3° (I've not go the detils to hand but I've listed them at work i'm sure its under this much)
Rear track 10mm wider (just different alloys no rear chnages)

The alloys are nicer looking but its no huge difference IMO the Cup is a bit more involved and makes you think without abs which some people (me included) use as a safety net.

Mine is a 52 cup if that makes any difference, so one of the early ones.

But defo no fag lighter, just a little plastic cap that says 12v on it, lol. Doesnt matter to me, as i just use my normal lighter.

The interior light i can turn on without opening the door though. And as i said, i didnt get rain sensitive wipers/auto lights. But to be honest, im glad about that, as i had them on my dynamique and they annoyed the hell out of me coming on when ever they felt like it.

Mines also on 45K miles, so nicely run in now, and compared to my mates 172 which is on about 20K miles, mine does feel much better. We've not had the chance to put them next to each other yet though to see how much difference there is. I doubt it would be much, as he has had his for over a year now, and is used to quick pull aways in his, where as i have only had mine a month or so, and still getting used to not wheelspinning it everywhere i go!

Full Fat for me everytime , full fat cheese n milk too , but not full fat birds ,lol ;)

I'd miss my xenons , air con and leather if i had a cup . As to the handling and performance i think its negligible . Depends how good the driver is !

My Cup also came with a rear-view mirror full of FF172's.

***runs***

My full fat came with a windscreen full of cups, but that was before i'd passed them. ;)

Can you real name this thread Marmite, love it of hate it as there aint going to be a winner here tonight folks

i think its healthy banter. me and my mate always do it down the pub. im always telling him he got the slow version.

its just a bit of fun, as at the end of the day there is f**k all in the performance between any of the renault sport range, so its all down to personal preference as to what you want from the car.

Actually, there is a difference in performance in the right hands. On a track a Cup will pull away from the Chubby one fairly easily. Chubbys do pretty well, but the cups are much easier to drive quickly

What you want is a Cup with CC, the best of both worlds.
