Which winter tyres?

  182 Inferno
Hello,

I'm after winters for my 182. In the past on other cars I have just uses Insta Turbo remoulds, which have been good, but I want something good and proper this time round, any suggestions?

Tyre spot are a quick option as I can get them asap, but they only seem to have cheaper makes... Camskill have more, including Michellin Apines 4 and 5.
There is £15 difference been the Apline 4 and 5. Has anyone used these?
There is also some Continentals which are little lower in price and I think there was Pirellis too..

Should I just pull out £200 for the Alpines or save around £50 and get Contis?

What have you used in the past?

Go and read some reviews online for quantifiable comparisons. They're tyres and just like summer tyres, remoulds are s**t, as are almost all budget tyres.
Personally, I got some continental TS830s for my car from outgoing stock last year for about half what they should have been and recently bought my girlfriend some goodyear ultragrip 9s. Before that I had Dunlop winterspord M3, which have been superseded a few times now.

If you click the individual tyres, it gives you performance in other tests such as this: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Continental/WinterContact-TS-850.htm

I normally look for something which works well in the wet rather than ultimate snow performance and gets repeatedly good results.

I went with the Continentals.

Ahh, so exciting for them arriving! (Yeah, I get overly excited for new tyres)

Kumho KW something on the R53. The were really only losing traction when I pushed past what I'd come snider safe on light fresh snow covered unplowed roads (prob 1-2 inches). Only time they failed was up quite a steep incline with over 6 inches.

Any tyres from the main brands with be fine: nokian, michelin, hankook etc

I've ran winter tyres on my van for 2 years now.

Never had snow since. [emoji20]

I`ve long suspected these are a best kept secret.
Please post full impressions/feedback.

Had them on my impreza. Absolutely superb. Wouldn't know they were winters, even when it was 20C.

Next model up has studs in... Came highly recommended from @Lal B3N who used to work for a well known tyre delivery company......

Buy them.

as are almost all budget tyres.

Not strictly true. Even the cheapest winter tyres such as Nexen Winguards will out perform any summer tyre during the colder months and especially in icy/snow conditions.

Shame its not a law over here yet imo.

But yeah Nokians dominate that market easily. Vredesteins are also absolutely brilliant.

They start to sell out fast at this time of year and then the price goes up.

Agree ish. They will in snow, but not in the wet which is what we get most of. I'd rather run new rainsports than budget winters in 5 degrees and rain personally.

The point is however that much like summer tyres, buy decent ones as the price margin is tiny compared to the possible consequences and they are your only contact with the road.

Im running Conti TS 830P's on the Megane, Brilliant even in normal conditions, Aye they don't have the outright grip that normal UHP tyres do but they grip surprisingly well

About to pick a set of these up tomorrow night for the megane, had a look on some tyre tests and they seem to be the best of the bunch.

I ran toyo snowprox on the clio for the last 3 years, superb tyre, got me wherever I wanted to go in all conditions, and wore very well, I was going to get them for the megane, but found some continentals for a good price on eBay near me.

Just replaced my PS3s with rainsport3s, could pull away Quick on wet 1 Degree roads with very little spin. Also Pulled my car up my street on snow covered roads that the PS3s hadn't been able to deal with in the past. Rainsport3s struggled a little when pulling away on packed snow/ice but did get the car moving, Yes winter tyres would be better in these conditions but this is the first snow I've seen in over 2 years. Winter tyres are only any good if everyone fitted them, if the road conditions are that bad your still going to get stuck in stationary traffic. If I lived in a remote location using untreated unused roads or had a RWD I would fit winters.

+1 brilliant tyres. Got me to places I wouldn't have been able to with out them the other year when we got some decent snow
