Whining with revs...

Hey,

My car makes a slight whining noise on acceleration and decelleration over about 3k revs.

I thought it was gnocchi related at first, but it does it parked up in neutral, clutch in and out.

I've had a quick search and lower idler pulley seems to be likely?

Camvelt &auxbelt kit were done 2010, 11k ago.

Cheers.

Mine started off like this about a year ago ended up making an awful noise went to Mark fish in the end and turned out to but all pulleys, cambelt and dephaser belt change car runs like a dream now. My whine got so loud I got asked at RWS last year if it was supercharged lol

Doh, just looked and it was timing belt kit and just accessory belt, no kit.

Guess that answers my question lol.

Aux kit has now been changed, still doing it though.

Can really hear it on the overrun, it's not stupidly loud but I can hear it. Steve @ Birchdown said he couldnt hear anything wrong but im still paranoid lol.

What else could it be?

Waterpump, PAS, alternator? Anything with a pulley? I have no idea

Is it normal for clios? Ive heard a few that make a slight whine.

Mine does it... PAS is the cause on mine. Go full lock and give it some real force when it reaches the end of lock. If the pump gets mega noisy there's your problem.

Yep! Spot on lol

Thanks, wish I found out before I had aux belt done as i presume it has to come off again?

If the PAS pump is to be changed then yes, I'm afraid it does but if its had a kit recently (or if the current idler is fine and the tensioner is still moving freely on its pivot point) i'd just put a new belt on which is around £14 new for a genuine item.

Thanks Mick, shouldn't be too costly then.

It doesn't get mega noisy when I give it full lock with definately makes some noise. Also, if I hold the revs at say 3k RPM or so, and move the wheel it changes pitch. Still reckon its PAS pump?

Thanks.

It could be but hard to say without hearing. It could be the aux belt idler to.

Well that sounds fucked lol me turning full lock.

deffo pas pump?

If it is infact the PAS pump, do I urgently need to get it done? Will it 'splode or just whine more?

Wish i'd of known before i had the aux kit done.

I thought some noise might be normal but it doesn't sound very good. That video was in reply to the Mick.

The actual whine when driving is different, changes pitch with steering aswell.

Thank you for your reply :)

Some noise is normal but a "whine" that's clearly audible when driving isn't especially if its increasing in frequency as engine speed (whilst under load) increases and needs looking at.

It's really hard to diagnose via mobile video uploads though as they really do amplify treble which makes things sound worse. Just take it to a garage or specialist to be looked at. To diagnose this kinda of thing I wouldn't even charge.
