Whistling noise at high revs...

  Black Ph2 172
Hi guys,

I have noticed my car has started to whistle at high revs under hard acceleration. Can anybody shed any light on this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Andy

Do you have an induction kit? I found that you can hear a whistle on some cars, especially with a K&N IK.

Alternator buzzing coming through the speakers - if you fitted your own sound system it will be amplified so more noticable.

Sounds like a problem i had. I had an exhaust mount that had broke so the exhaust was not sitting right, i fitted the new mounts and took the cat off to fit a decat and the noise was gone

This used to happen on my old 182 at high speeds but none of us go high speeds so...

I think at the time a mechanic told me it was probably air trying to blow through the vents inside the car?

Maybe you ran over someone and they are stuck to the bottom of the car and they whistle when you go fast because they get scared and want you to slow down.

its the exhaust manifold / gasket leaking a bit.

if your whilsting is in each gear and at the top of the revs, it's not going to be the old wing mirror thing - that seems only to be noticeable at speed and isn't gear/rev related.

have you a local indie specialist you could take it to for a diagnosis?

My 206 used to whistle through one of the vents between 100-110 indicated. So I either had to drive at 99 or 111. Was a bit irritating.

I get a squeek/whistle at high revs in all gears from 5k onwards, wasnt sure where it was coming from until i took the rear seats out and now i'm sure its coming from the exhaust. Still cant figure it out though :(

i get the noise in all gears above around 5,000 - the car has literally just had a new backbox (standard renault one). Should I take it to a garage or is there anything I can do?

Just imagine it, police officer so why 111 ???
Dan, err well my air vent whistles if I drive slower.

Lol !!:)

I dont know if it'll be the backbox itself but rather the sound is travelling through it, i dont know?? Defo sounds like mine is coming from that area, so i've been under there and made sure everything is as it should be but still does it :(

I'm sure I've posted this before, but when my mum came to visit me in hospital, she used to arrive at about 2pm after going 'into the office' in the morning, and set off home around 10-10:30 at night. One day she mentioned that she had found the same problem when driving home as well, and because going the slower speed wasn't quite as fast as she wanted to go (some times it would whistle at 95) she elected to push past it hehe :) She's 53.

do you think it's coming from the engine bay or underneath the car?
i've similar sounding symptoms with mine and have been told that it's the dephaser; it's apparently uncommon but not unheard of.
it's difficult to guess over the internet - there are quite a few things it could be and your best bet is in having someone 'in the know' listen and advise. if you were local to me, i'd offer to compare mine.
let me know if you want to know any more about this possibility (not that i know a great deal - some good news, some bad).

I think the noise is coming from underneath the car. It's getting progressviely worse I think as well - not good :-(
