Who lets iTunes organise their music?

  Mk2 Golf GTI
I'm tempted to make the switch and just let iTunes deal with everything instead of organising my stuff separately.

At the moment i have genre/artist/album/xxx.mp3

If i point itunes towards my music directory and select 'keep my folder organised' will it completely restructure everything into it's own format?

TBH i like itunes and don't see this as a problem.

Main reason i'm thinking of switching is because my external hard drive corrupted. I managed to recover the data but 100gb worth of music has gone into a folder called unknown and it's gonna take me months to sort it manually!

I'll probably re-format the old corrupted drive and copy all my music onto that, then let itunes organise it and see what happens. That way i'm not losing anything as i'll still have my old backup.

Any insight?

Cheers

When I first started using iTunes over MusicMatch Jukebox I did that. I hated how it screwed up the track tags that I'd spent the whole of time organising.
But when I got used to it I actually preferred it. I now let it organise my music all the time. It seems to do OK at it TBH. Only occasionally I have to manually edit something.

I put my music into itunes then delete the original file (if its MP3) because itunes will copy the file into its own folders.

I think it does a good job, im at college now so im not 100% sure but i think it does Artist/Album/Song.

I never need to use the file in the itunes folders anyway because its all on itunes itself.

Well, i've taken the plunge.

It's gonna take forever to go through everything though! Just gonna leave it to it overnight.

I've used Itunes since I began my mp3 collection, I just let it do it's thing and have never had any problems.

Looking good so far. O had a shut load of duplicates though!

Found a piece of software called fix tunes which is pretty cool though. It automatically writes DUPLICATE in the comment field and makes it a lot easier to mass delete dupe files. It can also automatically fix your ID tags by searching databases like amazon. Haven't really used that feature yet but will give it a go some time.
