Mine did :D << wasn't smiling at the time, had done around 59k miles, was on the A2 doing 70 ish in the fast lane at about 5:00 PM, had to swerve accross 2 lanes of traffic onto hard shoulder.. made it somehow. Done quite bad engine damage aparently, 4 valves mashed iirc and more, was quite a while back, luckily for me i have a close friend whos dad is a mechanic so really did it minimal price. Other wise would have been looking at serious £

Car was previously my dads so assumed the belt would have been done at like 50k and was gonna check when it got to 60 to see if i should get it changed just incase. Was its first belt. Never gonna make the mistake of not having a belt done again.

i suspect on the 172 engine it would well f**k it! defiantly bend valves poss other head damage (seats cams ect) and maybe damage pistons. never seen one gone tho. just guessing :)

Don't go to Renault mate...plenty of places out there will do it for less...and with more professionalism.

Mines in at Rentech on the 8th.

There was a guy on here who bought a 172, drove it for about 2 hours and bang, all 16 valves bent, head trashed.
If it does happen its most likley a new engine jobby which is usually cheeper than fixing the damage.

If they go before the 5 years or 72k then you should really request Renault help to pay as a "goodwill" gesture.

Im always getting problems with my car, so because I take my car to a dealer all the time, they give me a discount. they knock off £20 an hour 4 me.

Thankfully mg paid for it

and they will! as long as it has history!

See thats the cruel twist. I've done all servicing on mine since i've had it. Oil changes every 6-8k, coolant change, brake fluid change, the lot.
Not a Renault stamp to speak of but ALL Reanult receipts for bits, but if the cambelt goes pop tomo on 35k and with another 7 months till its due they will prob tell me its down to poor maintainence!
Like hell it is!

Mine went on my MKI Clio 1.2:( Right in the middle of a three lane A-road at the juncion of a roundabout. Had a t***** in a Volvo telling me it was a stupid place to break down, and because of the hazard I was causing I called the police. They said they were sending a car then rang back to say they had an emergency and would send someone in half an hour. The recovery people arrived within 20 minutes and had a nightmare stopping traffic and moving my car off the road.

Four bent valves and a reconditioned head later plus lots of money and two weeks and the car was back. At the time I wished it had been written off instead (dumb I know, but...)

Belt was 11,000 miles old.

cheapest option would be to swap the head mate. I actually have a spare here somewhere.

I'll reply to your email with a quote.

All this talk of cambelts snapping has made me pretty worried!

My car is just about to hit 20k but will be 5yrs old in October

Better get it booked into Rentech for September time

Hmm. My car's still on it's first belt and i've done 67/68k. I was going to leave it till 72k but should it be done earlier? This thread has got me worried! :S

How olds your car Dom? I'd get it done personally, get a renault specialist todo it, most back street places don't know you need to line the pump up, and you've got a pin for the cam.

Better safe than sorry, if it was my car I'd get it done (I left mine to 72K on a 2003 model)

  LY 182
i've done snapped belts on 1.2 8 and 16v clios (one had bent 3 and the other 4 exhaust valves
escort 1.8d that was scrapped as it had snapped the cam in about 3 places

Theres also a lot of garages who's messed them up not using the correct tools on the enginer all of which are goo garages and think they have done one before.

I woulnd't worry to much the dci one is different won't take the same loads but 72k 5 years maximum. Its checp to have done anyway.

My cars about 4 1/2 years old now.

I had taken mine to a garage that my father used to go to because 'it's cheap'. Now i know why, they've got monkeys working for peanuts. They didn't reattach my rear lights properly so water managed to get it and rust the connector and not to mention they managed to let my father drive his espace away without any engine oil in his car!

How much roughly we talkin here for a change? Costly job? Anyone know anyone around manchester that would do a good job?
