Why buy a clio over any other sporty hatchback?

This isnt a hate thread lol or anything like that I just generally want to know why people have chosen a clio over other cars in similar value/engine/size. I love the clio but it might be because it was my first car... but saying that why DID i pick the clio over other cars... lol I dont really no why tbh I just liked the shape oo and I LOVE FRENCH CARS!! :rasp: (that was sarcasm for anyone without a sense of humour :))

Any opinions are appreciated, Thanks

I have grown up with french hot hatches (Peugeot till they went sh*te) the 182 was the only car that still had any of the charms of previous small sporting hatch backs. Tested the likes of the CTR etc and made my choice.

If I had to replace mine tommorrow I don't know what I would buy. Could happily choose a few cars to sit alongside it though.

  FF 182 w/cup packs
it was the newest, quickest and well spec'd car for the money, and i previosly owned a Megane coupe and loved that.

I was thinking about buying a 182 next year and how sweet its gonna be to own but then I thought what if there is another car that is as fast but maybe cheaper or looks better (if possible). From owning a clio from the start I dont know alot about other cars so have jus stuck with renault.... Does anyone think I should research more cars or just be more than happy with the 182? Somebody yesterday said I should get a civic type r but, like I said before, I dont know a thing about them.. :(

Go out and drive them and make your choice from there, that alone should be enough to help you decide.

Folks bought me a 1.2 RN as my first car, loved it so when I had that for a few years I moved to a new 1.2 Dynamique, then to a 172 Cup.

They just have that something that I love, the look, the handling, it's all good. If I had money spare now to buy a car I really want I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Clio, nothing else appeals to me.

  BMW M135i
Seemed to get the most for my money and it ticked all the boxes in the looks, toys and performance catagories. Other things didn't seem to cover them all, came very close to buying a Yaris T-Sport lovely car but the least said about that interior the better.

  FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU
I havn't got a sport, but i chose a clio because i got a higher spec for my money and better looking car than any other hatchback.

  172
I'd mirror what people others have said, it's cheap, it's fast (for the price) and it's also got a great spec (again, for the price).

As Clarkson said of the 182 - "you can't go faster for cheaper".

Edit: I should make it clear I was talking about the 172 specifically.

There in a class of there own, nothing comes close! CTR's an the like are in a different league as there much bigger family cars. Nothing else this small has this much power!

Now ill wait for some smarty pants to prove me otherwise!

  172 cup
low weight, not forced induction or 4wd, power to weight ratio, insurance friendly, hasnt got any silly toys, good MPG and relatively cheap

basically a replacement for a mk 2 golf and i couldnt afford a DC2

I had two R5 turbos' for over 14 years and loved them, however, when I plonked my butt into my 172 the drive was so smooth, plenty enough power and all the toys. I miss my 5 but the 172 is a much better car. One has to move on at some point doesn't one! LOL :) French is best IMO:D

  Saab 93 Aero Wagon
Quite simply i got hooked on Renault as a brand having driven my mums Ph2 ph1 1.2 RN.
Wasn't anything amazing but it drove well and was quite perky.

I then went and bought (and promptly crashed) a T reg 1.2 RN. Got it repaired and then it was faultless for a good 2 1/2 years until the time came for me to step up to the big wide world of Renaultsport.
I wangled a drive in a 172 Exclusive and the crazy torque steering aside it felt bloody brilliant...the Cup was the car though.

had a punto gt (loved it), wanted something newer, but the punto hgts are poor imo, nothing else came close for what i wanted, small pocket rocket lol. Dont like big jap turbo cars, abit chav?

  Recaro + Cupped 182
Had a Corsa Before and absoloutly loved it, but i think thats because it was my first car and it was a very honest 'little' car, then i wanted something more potent as i had it for four years. When I sit in traffic and it idles like its running on custard, or when windows wistle on the motorway or when the dash starts to buzz i think why the Funk did i buy this thing? then i floor it out of a sweeping bend in second and hear all that noise, and this seems to make my issues with the car go away, until i get stuck in traffic again...

  182cup & 172 racecar
I race one,and enjoy it so much why would I want to drive anything else.172cup track
182cup road
greeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

best spec for the money. I loooked at puntos corsa etc and non had anywhere near the number of toys as the dynamique. Was so impressed with the 172s when i'd been with one, i just had to buy one

thats what I wanted to hear, some research on other cars :) How long ago was it that you compared other cars to the clio?

Thanks

about 2 years ago. I had a punto sporting before, and went to look at the active sports when i went to get a new car, but spec wise they just didnt compare. My girlfriend has a corsa SXi, and drive wise its undoubtably a better car (i have a 1.2 SXi at the mo as a courtesy car), but it has no toys, costs about a grand more and really doesnt look any better. Also looked at C2's but i hated the interior and the build quality, and the 206s were over priced and looked dated

i bought mine as my second car at 17 had a sri corsa before. clio looks hell lot better and love the colors. and they are great fun on twistys

When I sold my Mk4 Golf GTI Turbo I wasn't really sure on what to get
and the short list was basically

3 Series Coupe
540i Sport
Leon Cupra R
Civic Type R

Had a drive all of these and each impressed on itself merits, but The CTR where well overpriced, the beemers where all real high milers, and I sold my golf as I got bored and the leon didn't that much different except more cheaply made - lots of creak & rattles from the dash on the on i drove.

Then EVO came our with its group test feature which included a Trophy and it sold me on the idea of considering one.

Looked on Pistonheads and there was a Black 182 with the Cup packs, and I i went out in it and tbh it was the most fun of any of the cars to drive and that was it basically.......

Im a renault nut, and have had 4 of the feckers

including a 5 gt turbo.

I love them, although there current offerings are pants and dull.

Although I'd have the 197 over the meg

  Clio 182
I have reasons to hate and love french cars. my current clio is the first renault i have had though ive had a few citroens and peugeots over the years.

My first was an axgt (500 with leather interior-wow!). When i first drove out the dealer with that i was hooked on french cars. You think the clio is light but this was on another level. Any slight cross wind and i was steering out of the hedges, slights bumps and you were airborne. It felt like it was on rails and coz it had no power steering it was so throwable and perfectly weighted (i prefered and still reminisce over the heavy steering of that car compared to the light steering of todays clio- it just felt right) Torsion bar rear suspension, twin choke rev band etc, etc. Loved that little car and its weird styling, it had fire extinguisher pockets on the front interior door panels (perfect for a glass bottle of irn-bru)

I had a 205 gti 1.6 after that which was also a little beast and was just as rewarding and some to drive as the axgt.

The reasons to hate are generally that they are built sh*t and dealers are also sh*t. Not very reliable, blew up engines in each and seem to spend alot of time in the garage. In the end the only people that could happily own them were people thhat werent afraid to do work on the cars themselves. But as most people dont have time or interest in this they ended up being impractical to own.

Since then ive stuck to fords, toyotas etc that are generally built better though lack the fun of the french hot hatch. Earlier this year i bought my 182 and have not looked back.

Rarely in your life you will experience a car that will put that smile on your face after embarrasing a much more expensive car or getting the rear end out on a roundabout. To sum the clio 182 up-its fun.

It reminds me of the fun driving the axgt and 205gti. If thats what your after in a car then dont hesitate.

  Golf R/Leon FR
had clio's as all my cars onto my 3rd one now the 172. :)

learnt to drive in one and just went from there.

have driven other hot hatches such as 106 gti, saxo vts but none were as high spec'd and quick for the money

  BMW 535D
had a clio 16v a few years ago, cost me £3000+ in repair bills alone but was the most fun id had on 4 wheels, then went to saxo vts, then one day i realised i could afford a 182! no competition really!!

best handling, best spec, best looking...........this list goes on :)

I had a 19 16v which I loved, someone wrote that off for and pound for pound can't bit a French hot hatch for performance. The jap/german equivelents were so much more yet didn't offer enough to warrant the price.

  clio 16v
French cars are unreliable pieces of shi*t but there is somethin about the way they drive that makes them different to any other car. It started with a 205 1.9gti which was possibly my favourite of the cars I've had, then a 106gti not bad but not as good as the 205, im now on my second valver. Have to run it as a second car though it breaks to much to rely on it as a main car lol

  R5gtt, 182, volvo...
ford fiesta st = poop
pug 206 is nice and i'd have one but its fat.. i'd rather a 172/182..
citroen thingy = poop..
golf = fat and heavy, costs to much, + there too big..
rover = gone bust but i like there mg cars, but there too big..
honda = to fast and furious for me + its to big to be a little hot hatch..

renault were the only people holding the ground for hot hatches in the last few years and they let that go when they fed the 197 lard.. its like a 206 gti now and although i like it, its not a real hot hatch.. 205 gti, 106 gti, clio 172/182, golf gti mk1/mk2, charade gtti, saxo, etc are..

i was looking for a car for a girl i know with a budget and i just couldn't think of a better car for the money... everything else seems fat, slow, sh1te...

...I just generally want to know why people have chosen a clio over other cars in similar value/engine/size.

Put quite simply, there wasn't, and still isn't, anything of similar value. At least not if we're talking about the Renaultsport models. 0-100 in 17s performance, superb handling and grip, and standard kit that's normally only found in the optional extras list of cars costing twice the price :D

because it feels old skool compared to all the other digitized/tamed hatches out there. near perfect front drive chassis and it has the feeling that every bloke likes, it feels like a small, light car with a big, torquey lump. something all the other cars i've driven lack. (ctr, vts, dc2 etc...)
