Why didnt the trophy come with xenons?

  insignia
Its probably the one thing that is most mentioned on my car especially at night. My friends will say wow check the lights, its like a blue/purple colour what is it? I say

'there xenon lights'

cool as f**k

Blaze, This is you only explanation;

PaulJ their is gas in all bulbs it's the way it does it. HID's are what was fitted to the MK1 172, I had one, the 182 does NOT. Xenons have Xenon and have high voltage packs. They are not the same.

HID use ballast packs to increase the voltage to several thousand volts, this is the 'ping' start-up people have mentioned. This then drops to a lower maintained voltage but still way above filiment halogen bulbs. HIDs legally require auto-levelers and washers when fitted as standard. If the 172 didnt have these then it never had HIDs.

I know little about the 172 but maybe it simply used a projector lens as per the Ford Puma???

You can get normal Halogen bulbs with some Xenon gas which give an apperance of HID but they are cheap and inferior and not what the 182 uses.

Pls cut and paste all you like but the fact remains the 182 FF has HID dipped beam headlights.

PS flattered to be called a young'un :)

lol, xenons don't even do the full beam mate, they're standard halogen filament lamps. Xenons are only dipped headlights.

This is the most valid point so far-they are two seperate bulbs on a Clio, full beam xenons would be weapon-grade! I've just been for a drive around the back of the downs through Falking and the halogens worked great, the only dangerous bit was being blinded by some c**t in a Beemer with Xenon headlights, I had to block them from my vision with my arm.

I think they probably left them out because of all the points raised, the Trophy is based on the cups 'stripped out' idea and they save weight and cost. Renault made less money from the Trophy's than any other car, the Sachs dampers cost 10 times as much as the standard cup ones. They made them as a sort of advert for the Renaultsport brand, so they would get a great write-up and encourage more sales across the Clio range.

Very interesting about the HID/Xenon lamps, you guys really are a bunch of stato's, here's another one for the pot: 0 degrees Kelvin (0K or absolute zero) is equivalent to -273.15 degrees celcius. Interestingly this temperature exists nowhere in the universe.

HID can cover a large group of lighting(not just cars)

basicly means light produced by an arc rather than a filament

so all HID/xenon/metal halide used on cars are the same, use a high voltage to start the lamp then lower it to maintain it

xenons are posh lol?are fiat puntos posh?
would like them for the colour but to be honest my i've never had any problem with not been able too see!
heard it's commong on r32's and their about 200 quid a time to would rather have gay yellow lights and pay a tenner a bulb!

Imo Xenons light up the road better than standard bulbs . Try driving alongside another car on a dark motorway and compare which car is the lighting the road up better .
I'd never have a car without xenons ever again !

Whoever thinks xenons are the same as normal lights is on something.Every now and then i take may dads focus c-max to pick up my son ,usually at night and the difference on an unlit road is literally night and day. They are way more effective than standard candles

My mates Golf GTI has Bi-xenon headlights which means his standard dipped beam also works in cinjunction with the Halogen main beam.
I think it works by a mirror swivelling each time he selects full beam. It lights up the road pretty damn well! :D

The Trophy is based on the 182 Cup, as that didn't have Xenons the Trophy doesn't.

It doesn't make any difference to me. Xenons look nice, and project a nice white light, but they don't actually light up any more of the road. The standard cheapo lights do more than a good enough job.

rubbish, thet xenons are far brighter than normal lamps... what would be the point of having them otherwise..... drive a normal car at night down the same country lane straight after driving one with xenons and you will see the difference...
when i got my 172, i had a fiat brava for sale.. on the test drive, it was actually at night when the new buyer came, i had to check the lights afterwards to see if the bulbs had blown they seemed that dim....

Puntos have projectors, not xenons.

Contrary to the post earlier in this thread arc discharge bulbs do need to be replaced and they are far more expensive than tungsten filament bulbs.

Arc discharge bulbs lose their brightness! These bulbs work like an arc welder, you have two electrodes and the electricity jumps (arcs) between them. This arcing process actually burns aways the electrodes so the distance the elecricity has to jump is further and the intesity of the light reduces.

Er, have you been everywhere in the universe then?? :S

Does anyone know how you tell if your xenon headlights are set to the correct height? Is there a specification for this? Or a setup procedure? I am aware of the screw mechanism thanks to some other kind posters.

Would this not just be headlight alignment? Your local MOT center will have the kit to check alignment but I don't know what the settings should be...

Just for the record, the Mk1 172 DID NOT have xenons, it came with double optics iirc, but they are standard filament lamps as far as I'm aware? Some confusing and misleading information appearing in this post...

lol, no worries mate... I know for a fact they were not xenons even though I have never owned a 172...it's not rocket science ;)

Fyi
HID's are a general caterory of ligting using the discharge method
Xenon is a gas used in HID hence why they are referred to as xenons
(HID's are Xenons)

http://www.drivewerks.com/catalog/Hella/PIAA_glossary.htm

High Intensity Discharge (HID)

A light source in which light is produced by a stabilized arc that burns at a much higher color temperature which creates a whiter light output than a standard halogen bulb. This arc is generated with an igniting system and ballast.

Xenon
The gas used in HID systems that produce the extreme white color. Xenon gas is also used in some halogen bulbs to produce a whiter light and to keep deposits off the glass tube.
:)

on a side note you can also get ordinary halogen filament bulbs made from a mix of halogen and xenon.
these are also referred to as xenons so maybe that is where there has been a mix up
