Blaze, This is you only explanation;
HID use ballast packs to increase the voltage to several thousand volts, this is the 'ping' start-up people have mentioned. This then drops to a lower maintained voltage but still way above filiment halogen bulbs. HIDs legally require auto-levelers and washers when fitted as standard. If the 172 didnt have these then it never had HIDs.
I know little about the 172 but maybe it simply used a projector lens as per the Ford Puma???
You can get normal Halogen bulbs with some Xenon gas which give an apperance of HID but they are cheap and inferior and not what the 182 uses.
Pls cut and paste all you like but the fact remains the 182 FF has HID dipped beam headlights.

I've just been for a drive around the back of the downs through Falking and the halogens worked great, the only dangerous bit was being blinded by some c**t in a Beemer with Xenon headlights, I had to block them from my vision with my arm.
I think they probably left them out because of all the points raised, the Trophy is based on the cups 'stripped out' idea and they save weight and cost. Renault made less money from the Trophy's than any other car, the Sachs dampers cost 10 times as much as the standard cup ones. They made them as a sort of advert for the Renaultsport brand, so they would get a great write-up and encourage more sales across the Clio range.
Very interesting about the HID/Xenon lamps, you guys really are a bunch of stato's, here's another one for the pot: 0 degrees Kelvin (0K or absolute zero) is equivalent to -273.15 degrees celcius. Interestingly this temperature exists nowhere in the universe.

Whoever thinks xenons are the same as normal lights is on something.Every now and then i take may dads focus c-max to pick up my son ,usually at night and the difference on an unlit road is literally night and day.They are way more effective than standard candles

when i got my 172, i had a fiat brava for sale.. on the test drive, it was actually at night when the new buyer came, i had to check the lights afterwards to see if the bulbs had blown they seemed that dim....

Contrary to the post earlier in this thread arc discharge bulbs do need to be replaced and they are far more expensive than tungsten filament bulbs.
Arc discharge bulbs lose their brightness! These bulbs work like an arc welder, you have two electrodes and the electricity jumps (arcs) between them. This arcing process actually burns aways the electrodes so the distance the elecricity has to jump is further and the intesity of the light reduces.

Would this not just be headlight alignment? Your local MOT center will have the kit to check alignment but I don't know what the settings should be...

HID's are a general caterory of ligting using the discharge method
Xenon is a gas used in HID hence why they are referred to as xenons

Xenon
The gas used in HID systems that produce the extreme white color. Xenon gas is also used in some halogen bulbs to produce a whiter light and to keep deposits off the glass tube.
on a side note you can also get ordinary halogen filament bulbs made from a mix of halogen and xenon.
these are also referred to as xenons so maybe that is where there has been a mix up
