Why put on 15" alloys???

  clio 182 sport
So i was at castle combe a couple of weeks back and spotted a couple of track clio RS's with 15" alloys on and i have seen some other clio's on here with them also on, Obviously apart from the looks and cheaper tyres is there any other reason why people put 15" alloys on there car???

P.S. i am sorry if you think this is a stupid question ......... and i would also like to add i would have thought the car would handle better with 16" this has been buggin me for a while now. :)

I can't wait to get the OzF1 on my Cup, cheaper tyres is the best part, RSR at £75 a corner, that's silly cheap!

done it for the weight aspects, 2kg a corner lighter of unsprung weight and thats just in the wheel not the wheel/tyre combo... gotta run 195/50s tho ;)

When were u at combe? I was there a few weeks back.

The primary reason I fitted 15s was the cost. 15" tyres are up to 50% cheaper than 16s. But as a result the car drives so much better. The stock 172 wheels are super heavy, my F1s are significantly lighter. Plus the cornering is better.

For track day cars its a no brainer. I wouldn't do it on a road car as it looks a bit silly without lowering it, and lowering compromises the ride.

Mine feels faster on 15s and rides slightly better to thanks to the 50 profile.

Not all 15s are lighter though. 2118s for example.

Better acceleration, I really love the way mine feels on 15's.

you didnt really try it out on 16s though lol cant blame you thought as the OZs suit it better IMO :)

cheaper tyres is why i want a set lol everything else that goes with them is a bonus :)

cheap tyres for track, that's about it, imo its a step back in looks, mk 2's look better on 16" as they fill the arches better

they handle and feel much more responsive mid cornering on 15's even my 1.2 16v's i used to run turinis on the road and had 15s for track and going a blast

RDH can you tell me how much that's lowered? And I take it that you have the 50 profile on that picture? I've got coilovers and 2118's on order so would like to get an idea of how it's going to sit... that looks damn perfect to me!

I never measure it tbh mate, and I never altered the height from when I bought it. It was pretty much the perfect height and stance imo.

What are 2118's like with eibach sportlines? Are coilovers needed for them to fill arches?

The main reason is cost of tyres, it will improve the ride as well, as the larger sidewalls give more compliance.

If you swap like for like weight difference will be negligible. It's a common misconception that smaller wheels are a lot lighter. The smaller rim means it is lighter but you end up off setting it with a heavier tyre as you need to have more tyre to make up the over all diameter of the wheel. However most people end up using OZ F1's or Pro Race 1.2's which are actually lighter rims because of their design so you do get the benefit of the lower unstrung weight but not really because of the size reduction more the type of wheel selected. I don't now what the 2118's weigh so not sure if they weigh less.

By fitting the 15" wheels it will actually reduce turn in response as you have more tyre wall flex (again assuming a like for like swap) however a lot of people seem to prefer the 15" set up's responsiveness on the 1*2's.

As for how they look that is all personal preference but remember that by lowering the car to make it look better on 15"s you are most likely completely negating the ride improvement. But most won't care in an RS clio, they aren't really bought because they are comfy.

so basically its cheaper, that's why mine will be getting 15"s for track and 15 inch steel wheels for winter tyres once I get it back on the road.

Is this on sportlines?

Yes. That was the day I picked up 2118s and coilovers but didn't change the coilovers till the day after these pics. The sportlines were bought from new and had done approx 6 months/5k miles at the time of pics.

I was there at the forge action day. I have the 182 phase 2 in titanium silver with carbon bonnet. I run a set of 15 f1 oz's but i find its quick to 100mph but i find when your over that the 16 pull better i also find that the 15's spin up to much out of some of the bends im trying my 16's next time at combe
