Wierd engine noises

  PH1 172
Over the weekend and last night I have noticed wierd engine noises.

In 3rd and 4th instead of getting the usual low toned grunt from the 172, that seems to have got quieter and I get this higher pitched noise now but this is not that loud in 1st and 2nd compared to the grunt.

When I am slowing down to below 20ish mph I get another wierd noise which sounds like scrapping, almost like the moving parts haven't got enough momentum to move and so grind very slowly.

Any suggestions as to what the problems could be even though it would be hard from the info given would be greatly appreciated.

if you run the engine with the bonnet open can you hear this noise stationary or when you rev the engine coming from the left hand side? (as your looking at the engine)

Will do both of these tonight and get back to you.

Just to let you know I had the cambelt done 4 months ago

jack your car up and spin the wheel if you can hear something like marbles rolling around in atube then you bearings have gone

UPDATE:

Right I opened up the bonnet while the car was running and I can't hear the same noises as before when on idol or revving but on Idol the engine has a loud tapping noise (sounds a bit like a diesel) and is coming from just under the engine cover to the left (looking at the car from the front).

Haven't had a chance to check the bearings, pads or disks yet.

dont worry about the tapping they all do it.
sounds like a bearing problem or could be a gearbox needed new oil

Update:

I have

checked the wheel bearings = Fine
changed the gear box oil = no change to noise
checked pads and disks = Fine

Me and a friend last Sunday seem to have located the noise. It is coming from the pulleys at the top of the engine near the rocker cover. They are making an awful noise on idol and when driving the noise is affected by the speed of the engine. I also spoke to a mate at work who loves his porches and he said that the bearing on the pulley could have gone since I had the cambelt change or it could be one of the 2 cams failing. Either way it is not going to be a pretty job for the boys at rentech as I am taking there after I was happy with the job they did on my cambelt.

Could be the cambelt idler bearing or tensioner bearing mate. Reason I say this is because my valver engine is in bits at the minute and both of mine seem noisy. The engine seemed a bit noisy when it was in and running so puttibng it down to one of these. Probably the idler.

Cheers for the info mate. Would these both get affected by the engine speed as the noise does?

The tapping noise is the charcoal cannister located just under o/s headlight! ;)
