What's the difference?

Different frequencies I think the way that 5ghz transmits it gets less interference, therefore a slightly better speed.

5 will give you less interference as more household stuff uses 2.4 as well, it's a less congested frequency band.

2.4 has better range.

5 is not necessarily quicker than 2.4.

I thought 5 was better range (essentially for N rated kit (agn cards)). 2.4 is for the older stuff bg cards.

5 has worse range and worse penetration of objects (i.e. walls).

With signals in general the higher the frequency the shorter the range, or requires more power.

Some N kit has stuff like MIMO which helps boost the range, or I think has more power applied to boost it's range.
