Williams engine fitted!

the engine is in now and the car has been given a new lease of life, it is everything i was hoping/expecting, effortless low down power, pulls far better in the higher gears, it sounds alot differnt, alot of hissing and whooshing  which i actually rather like, the car is now reaching the point i had always wanted to get it, it looks very clean but original except de-badging, but the performance and the noises it emits now are far from standard!

the spec is -

late 1995 williams engine with all perishable items re-newed

- hill power stage 1 williams chip

- straight through de-cat with full magnex stainless steel system (Keeping the cast 16v manifold which is supposed to be better?)

- pipercross induction kit

i expect the aftermarket bits didnt increase performance but they add to the effect i feel, and certainly the chip increased throttle responce.

i havnt had much of a chance to get a real feel for the performance yet because its been a bit wet and it just wheel spins in the first 3 gears, but i managed to give it a nice run today in the dry (missed the early cold air unfortunatly, it was showing 11deg when i was out) it certainly goes better, i still struggle a bit for grip when coming out of a bend im learning to not use the throttle as an on off switch and instead trying to feed the power in gently,

all i need to do now is get the sodding leather rear seats in,

Ben H your card has been marked, and the grand showdown awaits!

lofty, what sort of sound does the exhaust make?

deep gurgling sound when accelerating gently up revs? like a tuned cossy?

or a tinny clogged up type sound

and is it 3" ur exhaust pipe?

Glad to hear u like the williams engine... it is a great bit of machinery!!!

half of it is the induction noise, the noise is a deep rumble at idle, and then (unlike when the cat was still in) it grows with engine revs, it sounded better with the cat in IMO didnt get louder at high revs,

all this is irrelivant because when you floor it the induction noise is what you can hear, about4 or 5K onwards it sound like an aeroplane,

and i get a little turbo style chirp when i blip the throttle at idle,

oh a little pop on gear change,

lol nice

hmmmm Scorpion or Magnex arghhhhhhhh
i wanna be happy with what i get.. wanting it to sound mean! ordering tomorrow morning :(

Good effort Lofty, its good when it starts easily after an engine swap isnt it!

I am very tempted to do a swap. Now, wheres my cheque book, i need an engine...

  172 exclusive no 172

now ive read this the bottom of my ported head is going 2ltr.

Hopefully have it up and running by xmas at the latest.

good work lofty :D

i cant wit til its done now.. so did you notice straight away ??

well i went out for a little wizz up and down a little bit of ring road, (ext. temp showing 9 deg for those who are intrested) and on a few fairly gentle exits from round abouts and then booting it i was really astonished, loads faster than my 16v in the same situation,

im not sure how much significance is in me keeping the 16v box, my top speed is proably only about 125 now with the lower limiter, and that suits me but perhaps thats why it seem so much quicker,

i reckon i might have found a massive supply of 2 ltr engines, race spec ones, Robbie you sgould be able to work out where it is, after the place i was asking about, it might be a duff contact but..... i was chatting to a lorry driver bloke who worked for renault sport racing right up untill its was all sold off/wound up a year or two ago, he took 2 articulated lorry loads FULL of spider and luguna engine to the place i was asking about,

might be a red herring, but Robbie could probably source some with his contacts, he said the remainder went to the swindon place and to a privateer bloke from near WSM,

where ever they are now there was literaly 100s if not 1000s of them sold off, lucky it was raining or matey wouldn;t have been wearing his old renault sport "work" jacket,

2ltr is the way forward, im not just saying this because i have done it but those 13 horses dont look much on paper really make a differnce when they are hurling you along at silly speeds,

i suggest some one tries the crank and piston swap route, for some one with a bit of know how it could be a cheap way of doing it,

it cost me

£300 engine and box (bloke was later offered a grand he reckons!)

£320 parts for engine, belt, tensioners, etc etc

£160 hill power stage 1 williams chip inc VAT P&P

£300 to sort the engine, fit it, and also we had a load of grief with the box, other wise it would have been nearer £200

might seem pricey but remeber you are left with loads of bits to sell, that so far have amounted to about £450 back for me

everyone get out there and get a 2ltr bottom end!!!!!!!:)

Yeah 2.0 is solid power, I cant think of anyone whos gone to 2 litre whos not been well happy with it. The problem I have with this is that i dont wanna pay 2 grand+ for a hands off conversion - I want to source the engine myself and fit it myself, but the problem is (apart from the fact that Ive never done an engine swap before) I dont have a driveway or garage to do the work, and I certainly dont have the heavy equipment to get the engine out!

Now if one of our members could do a cheap 2.0 service for a grand - drop off the car then come back a week later - they would be pretty busy I would have thought.

So whats needed? the 2.0 lump, the Williams program for the ECU, the starter motor and thats about it?

Nick, get a coupla bods to assist, hire a hoist, get the gaskets and all parts etc.. I will oversee it at your place if ya want... it will cost ya beer and accomodation... but the beer bill may be quite high lol.

If you have a m8 with a garage, even better, a heater would be excellent...

If a few guys are reasonable with the spanners but dont have the experience with full swap overs and builds, then it would be a good opportunity to learn.

there ya go !.

Joe.

Me and my other half did an engine swap workin evenings and weekends on my saxo in December last. Took us two weeks, and it wasnt a simple swap cos we put a 106 rallye engine into my 1.1 saxo. Had a few wiring problems at first but we sorted it.

We just rent a garage (also acts as storage for our Astra rally car) :D

TOP JOB HOT DOG!

hope to see you out on teh road!

only to letch at the prostitutes,

i live in a village out near the tyre place, (pucklechurch)

does this mean your one of the baseball cap brigade who spend thier time doing reverse doughnuts out side of Burger King? (he does own an XR2 after all!)

Im going to meet up with Ben Hume to compare notes on a tuned 1800 Vs standardish 2000,

there might be room for an old ford!

Yeah maybe we should get together and form an amateur bodging co-operative...hire an abandoned unit in the middle of the country and get over there to work on our cars at the weekend!

Seriously though, I would be happier with the kind of job where I can close the bonnet at the end of the day, bring my tools in and leave it parked in the road outside my house without having to move it around. In other words, a throttle body conversion

hehe

sound like throttle bodies are gunna be popular next year

mite have to go the carb route to be difrent eh??????lol

mmmmmmmm the sweeeeet sound of twin 45s at full chat hehe

Yeah Ive changed my mind about turbo work. For a NA engine, the true way must be to stick with NA tuning - throttle bodies etc. A turbos one thing, but when you pull the throttle cable and see those 4 bad boy throttle plates twisting...thats something else.

Im thinking of going down the crank and piston swap route once my kit is fitting and i get a bit of money back. See going down this route do you still get the valver high revs or do you need to lower the limiter?

Technically you need to lower the limit as the diesel crank is not as strong, but you might be able to get away with it. If you fitted forged pistion, conrods, had the crank titanium nitride coated and used ARP bolts you could raise it, this is what I wanna do, how high you could go I dont know, anybody wanna suggest a limt? 8500 would be nice :D

Unfortunately, to get to my house is through st.pauls and buger king is a stop off for lunch sometimes. Not the nices of sreas no, and the prozzies.....ergh......you would of thought that the citycouncil could of gotten nice lookin ones.......

Just gimmie a date on teh comparison!!!!

Ive still got to whack on the new head, and re jet the carb, thens etup teh N20 again, so its running pretty rough at teh mo.......ergh.

Well Lofty, it seems as if the gaundlet has been laid down...and Id be happy to "compare notes"!

Im not sure if youve ever met a guy called Si with a Willy 3 on 100bhp nitrous jets in Bristol? Anyway, off nitrous and in a straight line I was leaving him every time - naturally, an outcome reversed come the flick of the nitrous switch!

But what I did notice was that at lower speeds out of roundabouts in 2nd, without nitrous, he had the legs. For all the work done on my engine, its still a high revs machine. So I wont be too disappointed if it takes a while before I get past!

I dont think we should meet to race, as the speeds wed be likely to achieve "in the name of science" would probably be a bit heady. Basically, it wont be a quick off the lights job then head for home, as I suspect I wont pull away until 3rd gear. Id really love to show you some roads just about 10 miles over the Severn Bridge - as I dont think that the roads around Bristol are quite as satisfying, or allow you to explore the real capabilities of the 16v/Willy in the way some Welsh roads do. The roads Im thinking of are better becuase theyre well surfaced, quiet and easy to read for the first-time visitor.

Im interested to see how the 2.0 does on 40-70mph country roads, as I suspect thats where the better torque spread will be best compared to my high rev heaven!

So if youve got a few hours and about £20 some time we could make a short but rewarding trip over the bridge. Or, you could suggest something similar locally?

Cool....can we wait till i get me new head sorted!

its full race spec but restricted by the DFT carb

  BMW 320d Sport

Yeah yours takes on and canes all comers around Donny! But I still dont think its standard...no Willy is that quick as standard, yours is like a rocket ship!

  ExigeV6|Q5|DS3|Fiat

i rekon i have the quickest 16v being standard. I have raced many other 16vs and won hands down sometimes almost 2 cars lengths infront also a willy 2 the other day and he couldnt get past until 4th gear at about 92mph. In terms of figures a recorded 7.1seconds in the dry and a lethal 7.7 in the wet the figures speak for them selves.

The only reason i can think of is that the car has been driven hard all its life. This is not to say its unreliable cos i dont have half the probs other 16v/willys seem to have on here.

Nick bring the AP-22 to Brands on the 17th - do some rocket testing hehe

oohhh..touch wood mate!

and i can vouch for him...wheni went for a ride, 2 up i.

i thought" feck me, this is pretty damn fast for 137bhp!!!!....i.e. too fast for 137bhp! LOL

  williams and trophy

yeah i can vouch for the STANDARD williams lol

and as for something having been done to the QUICK ones .............. i have to disagree..........like the 172s have power figures all over the place, looks like the willys do too...only the willys seem to be quicker than the FAST 172s , and thats the SLOW williams lol

fast STANDARD ones like mine and craggys seem to take a lot of beating ....... even by heavily tweeked machinery, a mere 1/2 second etc for thousands spent on engine work.........hhhmmmm
