Williams for £1k

I have a dilemma.

I have a dead Escort RS Turbo sitting in the garage, needing at least £500 of work doing and probably £1k+ to get it properly sorted out. Once its fixed, itd have to be taxed, MOTd, and it will probably cost around £100/month to insure, not to mention a fortune in super plus if I use it regulary. And its would also be as unreliable as all old, modified Fords are.

My brother has a williams 3 that hes fed up with. It needs a new clutch, sunroof leak sorting, water leak in the engine bay sorting, steering is not right, needs a service, passenger window wont open, hand brake cable snapped, new bulbs on the dash, the obligatory rear-arch rust... And I also reckon its had a hard smack on the drivers side seeing as its had to have welding done on it recently due to rust on the sill. It also has the cheapest, nastiest tyres in the world on it, which would ideally be replaced before it went backwards into a ditch.

Hes said hed sell it to me for a grand just to get rid of it.

I havent got that much cash (about £1.5k) so could probably *just* afford to get it and get the major work done if I go to Torsion Tuning, for example. I think the insurance will still be about £800 from what quotes I have got in the past (would be 25, no valid points, 6 years no claims, low insurance area) and it would still drink petrol (well, if youre driving it properly ;)). I currently earn an absolute pittance, so havent exactly got cash to throw about, and Id have to give up all my current drinking and eating out (about £30 a week) in order to pay for the petrol and anything that may (will?!?) go wrong. If it went wrong majorly then I would have *2* broken cars and no money. And mother dearest wont be ecstatic at not having her garage back due to me having two cars.

Now, its a bit tired, and would definitely not be a minter, but should I get it for a grand just so I have a runaround until I can get a better job with more cash? I suppose that in a worst case scenario I could always break it, but I have no driveway and the garage is full of Escort. What would a breaker pay for it? (infinicar?)

whaddya all reckon?

Its worth more than that in parts alone man - breaker might pay up to about £1200 for it - but dont break it, keep it!!

New shocks all round £160-80 plus fitting (not much)

Weld steering column £20

Bushes a few quid

Should solve the car not feeling right to a certain extent, make it drive more like a Williams again.. the other work is all pretty simple? Clutch? Tyres?

BUY IT!!!!

If you have to give up eating to afford the williams I wouldnt advise buying it as it isnt the cheapest car to run and a big bill (clutch/gbox etc.) would really have you stuffed. Willys need loving:oops:, you could always sell the RS to fund it though!:D

i wouldnt attent to try sort out your RS,ive just had a nightmare of a time trying to keep my Fiesta Rs turbo on the road for the last 18 months spent 60%of the time fixing it-35% of the time polishing it-and 5% of the time driving it,your estimate of the 1k to get it sorted will probably be nearer 2 by the time it is sorted and other stuff will go wrong in between, you would get more money by breaking it for spares than fixing it up and selling it on,My advice would be to get the williams..

Know what you mean about the RS - its been sitting doing nothing for about 2 years now while I struggle to scrape together the cash to get it running! Its great when it is though so I dont really want to sell it - seems like such a waste of money when I look at what Ive spent on it! Plus, its a better long-distance car than the williams - 100mph is only 4k rpm as opposed to nearer 5 in the willy.

Oh I dont know.

Lottery syndicate anyone? ;)

Think its too far gone to be honest - I reckon its had a drivers-side impact, leading to door and sill replacement at some point, so the shell is far from perfect as far as I can tell.

Do they still do new shells? (hahahahaha)

no but i have an apsolute mint FRST shell up on e-bay at the minute included is a £1200 private plate as part of the deal what is stuck on the shell because an MOT is needed to get it taken off, have log book V5 all history etc,off a car what had done 66K and was garaged for at least the last 5 years of it life,
