Windows Media Player web browser problem

dk

I have suddenly found that i cannot seem to play embedded wmv files from websites from within a web browser. WMP works fine on its own but not when trying to play a vid on filecab.net etc.

It downloads the vid in the background but nothing happens when i press play?

Its the same in FF and Explorer and I have no idea what to do, tried reinstalling media player, no difference, all updates installed, used to work, its XP Home.

Can anyone shead any light on this please as its doing my head in.

thanks in advance.

Might sound a weird thought but try clearing the internet cache, that's the first thing I would try. I had a strange problem with pictures and clearing the cache worked.

no mate, that didn't work, seems to not allow streaming media for some reason but i have tried everything apart from restoring whole laptop that I can think of to do.

Thanks for trying though

i had this problem with FF...

Direct show wouldnt play any embedded stuff, turned out i needed to reinstall WMP however you have done that allready.

There is a FF extension to download for Direct Show and WMP i think, worth a try.

Other than that just reinstall both FF and IE

tried to manually install the wmp plugin for FF but kept getting the error that the website wasn't allowed to install software even though its in the whitelist - arrggghhhhh

have tried reinstalling both browsers, think its nearly getting to system restore time!
