Windows XP & Invisible Folder

  Megane DCi 147bhp/350nwm
You've heard of hidden files and folders but they're easy to find :)

I like this little simple trick...you've all probably known it for ages or come across it or even think its pointless but it works wonders for those at work!

I'll give you a little step by step to doing it :)

Right Click>New>Folder

Right Click the new folder and press rename.

Then hold "ALT" and press 2 then 5 then 5 on the num pad.

This will give you an "alternative" space

Now Right Click>Properties> Customize Tab> Change icon..

Scroll along a few and there are 3 blank icons!!! Pick 1!!

And there you go - you'll only really see it if you click and hold your mouse over it which will select it!

Would be useful but dunno what I'm doing wrong.

When I press Alt then 2, 5, 5 I get cursor going to the end of the name New Folder and it stays there. When I press return it's still called new folder.

When I do click rename, name new folder goes blue but soon as I press Alt 2, 5, 5 the cursor goes to the end of the name new folder.

I'm following it exactly as you say.

Are you keeping ALT pressed down when you type the 2,5,5? If you are then you need type the 2 5 5 quicker. (you need to use the number pad keys tho)

KEEP ALT HELD DOWN AND PRESS 2 THEN 5 THEN 5 then release alt :)

Not working. I either end up with it still being called New Folder or (if num lock is turned on) 255.

Dammit! I've Gb's of filth to hide!

numlock needs to be on and make sure you're holding ALT not ALT GR.

what OS you using??

The only trouble is when you goes to a folder list for the desktop, you see a gap.... another option is to change the icon to match any one of the executables on the pc. Most people will overlook it if you give it a boring name... shell.dll or something.

Good little trick, only problem if you are doing it in work, from Net Admin side of it, its still viewable under Explorer, it just show a gap

^^^ and if you searched for the files such as *.jpg it would still search that folder if you did a search on the directory it was sitting in like the desktop folder.

or you could just create a folder as normal and no other user that logs on can get into it... and hide the folder from peoples view by putting a . at the front of the folder name.. oh wait thats linux ;)

Ye, but dont waste your time.... I threw a copy of Red Hat down the bog but it still smelt of sugar puffs..

Until someone does an ls -a or makes whatever file manager they're using show dot files? :rasp:

This is just the same as making a folder hidden in XP.. it's fine until someone tells it to show the damn file :p

Ye but if you think they are gonna sus there is a hidden folder then just chmod it so only one account can access it... chmod 600.. job done ;)

LMAO. I did write a whole paragraph of chown, chmod etc.. but deleted it as I thought "not even KDF is that pedantic!" :rasp:

Oh, and on the subject of being pedantic, you need 700 on a folder.. else not even the owner will be able to cd into it ;) :nono:

Fortunately with OSX I can make a folder invisible and have all my personal folders & files hidden within my own account, prob very similar to Linux.

Just drag it to the end then there's no gap.
