re: the shift boot. You should be able replace it without removing the gearknob (which is a complete b**ch to do). The shift boot is attached to a piece of pastic, which clips into the centre console. Just give the bottom of the shift boot a gentle tug and it should pop out. Therell be a cable tie holding the neck of the boot to the gear stick. Just snip that off and off it comes.
Shouldnt you have a leather one on the mk2 172 in the first place? I have in the Cup - costs £12.40 from any Renault dealer.
