They seem to work reasonably well and obviously the one benefit is not having to open the PC to put a card in, and not having to occupy a card slot.
Any of the main manufacturers should be ok, if he's wanting to use the "easy setup" function of whatever the router manufacturer is (if they have such a feature) then he should match the makes to ensure the software/hardware supports it.
