Wireless Network Questions

  Bumder With A Buffer
Question for the more techno minded here as im a bit stumped.

My old chap got a new BTHomehub recently and had trouble pairing his sony ericson phone up to the network.

Popped around today and noticed encryption was WPA which his Sony cannot handle to changed it to WEP. Paired up the phone fine and likewise my Iphone. His laptop runs Vista and redid the settings for that also and everything was good.

But my sisters boyfriends laptop keeps dropping the connection now :S He is running XP

Used to work fine before apparently (where-as my dads laptop also used to drop the connection occasionally before but is fine all the time now :S)

WTF is that all about? I told him to forget the network/delete it from network settings and re-enable it with the new wep setting but still keeps dropping out?

Any ideas? Channel settings? Or maybe a fcuked wireless on his laptop?

Ditch the home hub they're crap... got rid of mine after no end of problems with dropped connections etc... got a netgear and had no problems since

I ditched my homehub (as they are shite as u say) but my old man has a handset with his that he uses so getting rid is a bit of a no no.

Yeah I told them to do that...thunk I set it to 10.

Told him to go back to automatic and see how it goes.

I would recommend the Netgear WNDR3700 in particular. Awesome bit of kit !

I know its a arse to loose the handset, but i'd ditch the HH.

I've managed to convince 3 households to do the same replacing with Netgear kit and they have no probs... They've just had to a new phone/use an old one.

Assign the XP machine a static IP, if that doesn't work, disable DHCP and assign all devices static addresses.

Check if there's any updated FW for the HH.

Turn off/uninstall any third party Wireless Configuration software, use the Windows Wireless service to manage the connection.

Remove the network from the "automatically join" lists, rescan, add the connection and WEP key to the new network.

Worth a go!
