Wishbones

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
I have been doing some digging along with adam at the renault trade parts hub and have found that "cup" wishbones are in fact apparently not just on cups.

There are only two variants of wishbones for the 172 as far as we can tell:

ph1 and early ph2 = less castor.
Late ph2 (cup or not and inc 182) = more castor.

So it would appear that it's a myth the cup is different, so for example where I swapped to "cup" arms on our ph2 the reason it gained castor was it went from early spec ph2 to late, the cup part was irrelevant.

Can some people with original arms still on their 172 post pics of the arms next time they have the wheels off and say what age and variant it is so we can confirm this once and for all.

I suspect we are going to find the same story with sub frames as well, that it will be not the case (as reported on here) that cup wishbone mounting points specifically are wider but that its all late ones.
So again if people could provide pictures over time it would be useful.

Cool mate, thanks.

Would be nice to get a definitive answer to this as there is so much myth and legend on here that we have all been taking as fact.

Can someone just reiterate exactly what I need to photograph tomorrow?

The bottom arm, showing the mounting bolts for the outer balljoint :)

Its the angle of these two bolts that dictates how the balljoint and hence wheel is located in terms of castor (ie how far forwards or back it sits)

I'm obviously missing something but I don't ever recall Renault stating that Cups have different wishbones. Just different hubs?

I'm sure i can manage that! I've got a 172 cup as well so I'll try get some of them if i get time.

I'm at Dan's next Thursdsay getting my ph1 wishbones exchanged for cup wishbones. I'll get a pic.

No urgency, just thought the site could do with a definitive answer on it for when people search in future.

I had a cup packed 182 here yesterday and can confirm it definitely had the greater caster arms, didn't get a chance to take a pic but its back on Sunday so I will do so then to show what it is we are looking for in case anyone is still unsure.

I had a 172 cup in today for a track rod change, and predictably that is the more caster arms, but we all knew that would be the case on that one of course.
It was also longer track rods as well though just to confirm that.

Hi from Australia.

This is the passenger side wishbone on my March 2002 build 172 Ph2, original, never been changed. I want to upgrade to the extra castor ones to see if it solves some of the drive shaft binding i'm getting. Great thread and detective work Chip!

My 182 cup 54 plate has the lower castor wishbones but Dan did say it looks like they could have been replaced at some point.
