worn engine mounts leading to exhaust blowing?

  182 and cherokee 4.0
hi, i have been having problems with my exhaust for a while as it keeps blowing. i think the problem is that the engine mounts are worn leading to too much vibration/movement in the exhaust. does this sound right? i have been having a look on the k-tec web site and am unsure which mounts to get/which will need changing. the car is 04 reg and has done 38,000 miles.

can anyone help?

thanks

Same thing happend to me funny enough with 39,000 on the clock, Had to keep getting under the car to tighten up the bolts to the manifold and cat, In the end i got a new cat and touch wood has been going strong for the last 6 months with 43,000 on the clock, i did get the crappy manifold join cut off though and use a clamp instead as i was told by the garage that the manifold join is proper pony on the clio - dont know if its true my my prob is solved anyway...

av got a cat back with a de-cat and it's only been on a few months. the bloke at powerflow also mentioned summit about doing summit with the join from the manifold to the de-cat. some sort of flexible join thing?

the bloke at powerflow suggested trying the mounts first. do i need to change them all?

Is it blowing from a join in the exhaust then ? i.e from the front of the de-cat or rear of it ? that joint is pants on the manifold did the guy chop yours off ?? look under the car and see what type of join you got as my cat slides over the top of the manifold with a hefty clamp and has been rock solid, Did have the stupid join with the bolts and springs glad its gone now

  RS RIP
^^ but yours is rock solid into place now , and it has to be able to "flex" at this joint.

Your manifold where it's mounted to the exhaust ports might be under a lot of stress like that, because of the lack of flex further down :dapprove:

A guy on here was going to put on one of those flex-joints. this will be the best sollution.

hi thanks for the help. mine has the one with the bolts and springs. it blows from here and from where the straight through centre pipe joins the one leading to the back box (i had this joint welded and had started blowing again, i think the flexing may have cracked the pipe?)

So you think i should go for a flex joint as opposed to changing the engine mounts???

thanks again

fit a new gasket to the manifold/cat join, Most clios i see need a new one. The crack in the exhaust is a common plce for them to break, normally rust through

it's stainless so i doubt it could be rust. i think one of those flex joints should solve the problem like, agreed? how many miles/years do the engine mounts normally last? i might get them replaced with standard renault ones anyway?!?!?!

  RS RIP
Danny is right on the new gasket. Try that first. A new set from Renault costs over 30 pounds i believe but it's neccescary when leaking

And on my RS i have changed the mounts TWICE already in 70k. I like the way the car drives like new after , stops a lot of play of the engine. When the enigine is rocking all over the place you can imagine what the exhaust does

That flexjoint in the thread will be very good BUT will mean cutting up your existing manifold etc.

you'll have to forgive me i'm thick. what exactly is the gasket/what does it look like?

is there any reason why the manifold should not be cut?

cheers again just really want to get to the bottom of this

Sorry to jump in but i do understand about the flex needed in the exhaust, obviously i had my join cut and my cat now slides over the manifold with a clamp but there is still good flex... I tried gaskets and even welding but in the end a new cat and a new join and 6 months later its still going strong

do i just get the flex joint or do i need to get the engine mounts done as well? do i just get standard ones or uprated? how many mounts are there altogether?

"just get the flex joint" is an option but pretty much work , problem cured though.

I would def get new mounts when i notice a lot of play in the gearstick etc. By experience i can feel when my mounts are dead ; play in the stick; this goes with a loose feeling in throttle response , feeling the engine move, etc.

engine movement is not going to be good when trying to stop your exhaust from blowing. Get the mounts done (how any miles has yours done ??) + then get the manifold to cat gasket -SET from Renault.

it's done just over 38,000 miles. i will get some new mounts. how many are there? do all need replaced?

Hi, mines suffering from this as well,I know i need to change the engine mounts but would people recommend standard ones or pay the extra and go for something like the K-Tec group n ones?

gonna order the mounts from k-tec the morra and get it booked in for powerflow to fit a flex joint. i take it if i do this the need for a new gasket is removed? apologies if that's a stupid question

Well i had to replace the rear silencer engine mount at a cost of £20 and now the rear of the cat is leaking where it joins onto the middle pipe its leaking water aswell i think have to get it on a ramp again.
