Would this worry you? potential bodge by a well known garage

  ph1 track weapon
Hi All,

had some work done by a well know renault specialist last week. The told me when it was in that a driveshaft boot clip had failed, but that they'd secure it for me (for some reason this also cost £30) in 2 minutes.

the way in which it was done has worried me a little though. they have used two jubilee clips to hold the gaiter on rather than the usual clips that come as standard, reasoning that this is a safer way of doing it

Taking it to a local mechanic friend for some other work, he noticed this and alerted me to it aswell. his reckoning is that as its a spinning item then the added weight of the jubilee clips on the rotating mass would cause problems, much like a mis-balanced wheel. there is a slight vibration coming from the area too, so something is definitely up

have called the garage in question who say that its due to the originals failing too often and that its totally safe

really just want the opinions of others to see what you think? am due to have my cambelt done by them too, so if this is seen as a bodge then i dread to think what may happen when they do the belts?

any help apreciated

Not a bodge at all. Is a better long term solution that the OE clips as they fail at a rate of 2 per mile.

The lads at Birchdown sorted mine last week with a jubilee clip as well, much better way of doing it, rather than Renault cable ties.

Yeh but did they charge your £30 for the pleasure of securing 2 jubilee clips? Id be more pissed about that.

it's a dick of a job. Wheels off, clean up s**tty CV grease, re-pack the boot. What's the hourly rate charged by your company??
I see where your coming from Danny but would you REALLY say its a dick of a job?

CV greece - £5 from halfords
Jubalee clip 20p
takes about 10 mins to clean up the s**t and re pack the boot.

Isn't £30 an hours labour charge?

I have to agree with sideways danny, the CV boot grease is horrific stuff, a right pain in the a*ss to clean espicaly if its gone everywhere

Fair enough, didn't realize labour had gone up that much. I think it seems expensive as I just did mine myself so didn't really mind having to clean up all the shite.

On a slightly different note, said company are quoting 500 for cam and aux belts, plus another 100 if tensioners need doing too.

Good price? I've heard that up north places are cheaper nut nobody down south seems much better really

For a cup, that's quite a lot..

Ring Rentech or JMS. I think they're around £350/400 all in.

The tensioners should be done at the same time.

  Mondeo TXS Bardge.
going rate at a main dealers is £65+vat well for a low to mid value brand like ford renault citroen etc. BMW are £100 p/h for the first 2 hours then 70+vat ther after, and mini are similar, iirc the "local" jag dealers is £120 ph+vat.
