  clio rs

iv owned my 172 cup for a year now its been great fun, but the williams has always been in the back of my mind...i year ago it was a fast car when i went for a test drive but rust & reliability problems put me off & i bought the cup.

my cup is superchiped & is very very fast.

wat i want to know is if i buy a clio williams will i be disappointed??

I have had a Williams and a 172 (not cup).

The Williams is a nice car but a little old and more fragile. It is a better drivers car but is quite raw and not suited well to long m-way journies.

I got rid of it due to the above factors as I was doing 50 miles a day and in the end really began to grate on me.

The 172 offers 75% of the driving pleasure for 10% of the hassle/effort.

If you do little mileage and can be a designated weekend car I think the Williams is for you. If you do significant miles and need it also for commuting maybe you should stick with what you have.

I also think my 172 is a bit quicker than my old Williams but there is not alot in it.

I also think selling the 172 cup will lead to a loss which won't really be made up by the difference in buying a Williams. This is because a decent williams will cost 2.5k ish and the cup will sell for what 4.5k - trading 2k for another 10 years and prob 50k in miles.

Had a 172 then got a williams 2 as a toy...It broke time after time and by the time i was done fixing it...I'd lost interest and sold it. Paid 1800 for it and spent over a grand fixin it...Sold it for 2400...So still lost money on it.

Overall the car was a mass disappointment. Even on new suspension and brakes...It was horrible to drive, always had a feelin in my mind that it was tryin to kill me. That said my current 172 doesn't feel much better in std trim!

Performance wise there isn't much in it...The willy feels quicker, but after about 70+ the 172 will pull on it and pass it. On track, the willy is more nimble but again how people perceive fun must be different to me as it wasn't great. Prefered the 172.

Looks tho, the Willy is great, cool, cult and if you get a good one without a nest of spiders or wildlife in it...Your doing well...I'm glad i did it, but imo it was a let down.

Oh it was...Mind it was completely rebuilt...New aches, respray... But like i said. I lost interest! Got to within 200yrd of Cadwell and the Caliper sheered off ripping the wheel off and putting me into a hedge, lucky i was only doing 20!

I've had both and loved them equally. My Williams was like a child to me though....

Wouldn't want a williams as a daily driver though.

u shud learn to drive properly ;)

jamie....as for the 172 being the better car for long journeys??

how u work that out???? the williams cabin is a far comfier place to be. and on a long journey comfort is needed lol. iv done quite a lot of miles in both williams and 172, the seats and driving position in the 172 arent a patch on the williams. and the willy is more practical, can fit more in boot etc etc.

found that out jus before i bought mine, had the oppertunity to get a spanker 172, but the pram wouldnt fit in the boot, and seeing as tho it fit in the back of the valver i had at time, was only 1 place i was goin lol

Its my opinion and experience so despite trying to tell me how I should think and feel about journies in the car's it will not work. I prefer the 172 for commuting end of.

  williams and trophy
lol. not trying to tell u anything

but its well known that the comfort of the cabin is superior in the mk1s to the mk2s.

In your opinion.

I think the williams is much comfier, but my business partner just cannot get comfy in them.

I just think they are real good value for money. I don't think you can go as fast as reliably as a clio sport. I've had M3's, Evos, Scooby's etc but i always end up back with a clio.

mk1 seats (especially willy) are the best seats ever!

OH YEAH! like f**king armchairs!!

The Williams interior is comical. I reckon you are getting into a whole world of pain buying a Williams, no matter how good they are to drive. They are just too old now, imo.

  Turbos.
Yeah, sorry but look at the interior of a Williams, lol. Also, what about gearing, insulation and wind noise etc.? Comfort isn't just about seats...

  clio rs
how can willy seats be the best?
so i guess everyone with a clio trophy need to remove there seats & throw sum willy seats in there...does that make sense any1 :nono:

dont have any of that in either of mine, wind noise etc.

yeah granted the gearing could b a little taller but the overall package is still far better than the newer variants.

the seats are like armchairs, never got out of my car with an aching back or dead arse, something i cant say for the 172/182/trophys iv been in. the driving position is also much better, imo, all clocks etc very visible, and the general feel of the drive is superior too

i take it you havent even sat in a williams let alone drive one for serious miles.??

I got both and dont be running down the williams seats i think there class! dont look as snazy as the recaros but every time i sit in them i think there soooo much cumfier than i rememberd! only prob i have with the williams on long journeys is the ridiculasly loud exaust I put on! There older and need more care but if looked after and treated with maners theyl never do you any harm.

Ive got a clio williams atm stripped just running two front seats tbh the seats are squishy and comfy but not all that good for support on hard cornering. I only bought the williams to use as a play track car but it also gets used everyday.

vs a stipped phs 1 clio mk2 the williams is slightly slower, motorway speeds the willy gets eaten but upto about 100ish the 172 still has a small edge.

I think i would prefer the 172 engine and box (phs1 mk2) into the williams that would be pretty good.

The interior is gash and bloody aweful but hey ho its for driving not to look at, and i only drive it for about 3 miles top to and from work :D

I haven't owned either but i'd love to own a williams, as a track toy i'd get one over a 172 but as a daily driver aswell it would be the 172 for me.

lol..u want to try the 172 seats...they give u absolutely zero support for hard cornering. at least the willy seats will hold u in

the £130 a pair cobra buckets i have in the track car are even comfier than the 172 seats...also tested on a long run.....yorks-spa francorchamps. very comfy lol
