As far as I know...

A standard 360 controller plugs straight into a pc and works....
(even the wireless ones work straight away)

Yep I had one of them working on GTA 4 on pc!!

Just connected with USB and I had some button mapper software(can't think of the name :/)

that button mapping thing worked with the 360 controller also.

Yes mate PS3 controller works fine on a PC. You just need to download Motioninjoy -

Alternatively a wired 360 pad just plugs in and plays.

Tried motioninjoy. Just crashes whenever I try to instal the drivers also tried other methods found on YouTube but no joy
My pc does recognise that it's a ps3 controller when it's plugged in though...

will just go out and buy an Xbox controller later, be easier to have 2 different controllers anyway

I bought Xpadder (around £5). You can set up multiple profiles and I've done a basic one for windows navigation. Works well enough!
