Xenon question

Maz

  LY 200
Noticed the other day that my driver side xenon had condensation inside, arnt xenons meant to be sealed units ? if so why should this happen ?

Got it booked in to be looked at but thought I would ask on here first incase they try to fob me off with blah blah blas ..

Any help would be great please :D

It's common to get condensation in lamp units, even beemers do it. If you have a puddle slopping about in the bottom then thats excessive otherwise just run them and it should evaporate out.

could be a gap means that it is letting in a dampness of sorts creating the condensation a handy tip is place a silcia gel pack in the light unit at the back this will soak up all the condensation s soon as it starts to form

does the water dry out after the lights have been on for a while ?

the xenons on VAG cars all do this from time to time.

Not sure tbh will check in a bit

The reason I am concerned is my warranty runs out in October this year so I would like to get it sorted now than it to stop workign and have to end up paying for it !

Yeah my car does it from time to time, it seems to go when you've had them on a while.

You do realise October is pretty far off lol!

Very strange I was just going to post the exact same thread!! Mine is going in tomorrow to have its clutch replaced under warranty, and I am going to get them to check my drivers side light, as it is 80% covered with condensation and has been for about 3 weeks. Its got no better, and looks absolutely cack. I will le you know what they say about it tomorrow.

Water in the outer cover/lens or the xenon bulb part itself?

The outer lenses are not a sealed unit so will mist up.

the projector unit is sealed, the main beam units aren't.

check that you have a good seal on the rubber covers on the back of the lamps, as this is normally the root of the problem.

either that or the seal on the perspex covers (the cover of the actual headlamp itself) themselves can fail, causing the same result.

LOL - that's a good idea! We get sh1tloads of those silica gel packs in most of the kit we order. Normally they get thrown in the bin. I may keep a few to one side now...

To me that sounds daft, they're just going to become saturated with vapour from the air, any of you looked out the window recently?

tbh Maz, I wouldn't bother taking it in for condo on the lights, My golfs lights were condo'd up the day I picked it up, happens to most,if its like mine its just the inside of the main lens and not actually the xenon thingy. You risk all the male mechanics getting together and having a laugh at fag break at the " dozy bint that came in with condensation on her lights" LOL It'll clear up when its warmer.

Dont really care what they think lol if its a fault I want it sorted, doesnt happen on the other one so im guessing there is something wrong ..

Maz like I said mine is going in tomorrow for a new clutch, I will ask and let you know, save any aparant embarrassment

it isn't a fault, my clio did it as do most others i think, its the air and the moisture in it as far as I know. Unless renault have a machine that dries the worlds air so theres no moisture in it, theres not alot they can do i would of thought

It's not a fault it's a fact of life most modern headlights do it. Mine hasnt suffered but some will. If it was happening somewhere you couldnt see it you wouldnt be bothered ;) Worrying about it damaging the unit my arse, you just dont like how it looks.

I asked the same question a few years ago on here the day I picked up my car and Jeremy replied to the thread saying they will mist up as they are not sealed units.

At which point you removed the entire front end and complete light assembly and buffed it dry with the inner thigh skin of a nepalese virgin.

The outer lens of the lights aren't air tight if that's what you're querying.. I have a dead moth in one of mine.:approve:
