Your Honest Opinions of the 182 ... ?

Hey,

Looking at getting a new car later this year (oct/nov). Got a Fiesta zetec s at the moment, its ok but want something a bit nicer inside and faster.

What is the clio 182 really like as an everyday car? I haven't drove one but I sat in one in a showroom a while back and it seemed comfy, sturdy and looks the nuts. I've just read a review of the 182 trophy, sounds very good but will probably struggle to find one with so few available. Might be a bit to `stripped out` for me though. In an ideal world I want to find a 1 to 2 yr old, with 10k ish on the clock. I will have 11k tops to spend.

Advice welcome. Thanks.

Welcome fella.

You should find plenty available at that price...and probably quite a few under it too.

As far as is it an "everyday car" goes...in the last 2.5 years I've covered 66k miles and loved every one of them in my arguably far less comfortable pauper 172 Cup. You will get a multitude of mixed opinions on here so best go out and try a few yourself.

I feel in my honest opinion that it is a great little car, that is no problem day to day and is faster then alot of other cars out there; but could really do with some German build quality and aftersale service.....although, for what you get for your money, who cares.*

* Renault service still way below par though....:-(

  Clio 172 mk2
Not the rocket people may lead you to believe but very easy to live with on a day to day basis.

You'll get a cracker for that price, maybe even a trophy when the time comes. I wouldn't really say the trophy is stripped out. It seems to me with you wanting it nice for day to day driving, you want a full fat 182 with both cup packs. So you have everything, leather/alcantara, climate control, cruise control, cd changer, trip computer etc etc

Mine is ok. lots of problems. Now things are falling off. Saying that mine could be a white elephant. When it is ok after alot time in the garage it brings a smile to my face.

I had absolutely no problems with mine (well, 1 common problem, an oil leak on the top of the rocker cover - bolts werent tightened enough). Still miss it now (also miss my Williams Clio). Great cars in my opinion. If I were to get another now, it would be a Trophy, but will stick with the P1 for the time being ;)

Great cars personaly I'd go for a full fat 182 with the cup suspension pack.

There great as everyday cars clutch is heavy on them so round town it cna be a pain but your musles build up quick.

£11k will get you almost anything £10k will get you loads of choice of 1 year old or so ones. You can pick them up for just under £8k private or a grand more for a gaage one.

Why? Cant you afford one?

Retarded comment TBH.

Ok lets break this down -

1. Read the topic title, notice it says the word "OPINION" and incase you didn't realise a personal opinion doesn't nessarly mean the truth. (but in this case my opinion is true)

2. I bought my cup at 18, so your childish comment about "Cant you afford one" just slapped you back in the face. Oh and of course Daddy paid for everything.

3. Your a wh0re

4. Can't wait to get you over my knee so I can spank your little bottom.

i love mine, more than quick enough. Doesnt have as much feel as my old 205gti but it's a lot quicker and has a lot more going for it.

I'm on 28k miles, bought mine new in June 04 for £11,800 and it will still put a grin on my face when I go for a blast.

Don't be paying £11k for one now, no way! for one with 10k miles pay no more than £10k IMO

I've had a 182 FF with Cup suspension for just over a year from new, just about 10K miles.

Good points

1. Pretty quick - it ain't a Porsche but not bad
2. Lots of extras, CC, Xenons, half leather etc
3. Reasonable fuel consumption/insurance/purchase costs
4. Has been reliable
5. long service intervals

Bad points:

1. Renault Dealers - absolute muppets and, in my experience, incompetent
2. Build quality - interior rattles (from day 1) and interior fit is poor in places
3. paintwork on my black/gold marks too easily
4. Stereo not loud enough
5. can be noisy on motorways

Not sure I'd have another one. You get used to the performance pretty quickly so it ceases to "wow" you (unless you drive another car for a while) and Renault dealers are truly shocking. I'd really like a car that didn't rattle too.

I still find the performance quite good, but i do know what you mean. It spoils you though, as i found out when i drove some others car (none of which would be regarded as slow particularly) and found them all rather sluggish compared to the clio so in that respect it spoils you.

^^ true. The only other car I drive regularly is the wife's Civic diesel which obviously doesn't compare for performance. Having a Honda in the household does open your eyes to how poor Renault dealers are (and how good Honda are).

  182 Full Fat
Im still smiling after 2 and a bit years of ownership. Great little cars. And don't be put off by it because its French. (French= slightly rattly car!)

  MK2 Audi TT - 2.0T dsg.
I love mine, only had very minor minor problems with it, such as a broken speaker from the factory and a rattly seat belt.

Part of the charm :D

I do love my 182, but tbh, it prob won't be that long before I sell it for a Focus St or a new Leon Cupra. It is the little pocket rocket that people say it is. It is seriously grippy and very comfy. Everything seems pretty sturdy and they are more reliable than people think. Most of all it is very fun to drive... especially when the roads are quiet ;)

However, mine squeeks. lots. sqeeeeeeeeeeeeeek. It sends me insane. It attracts A LOT of attention, sometimes from people you'd want to avoid :( Also, it has a hell of a crap steering lock. The other thing you have to remember is that if you get it wrong it WILL spit you backwards through a hedge and not even have the courtesy to apologise. Cheeky little thing...

totally love the car and totally gutted to sell but if your in or near scotland you should check it out ...

182's rattle and drop to bits, but they're cheap and go like stink, as said elsewhere build quality could be better and Renault dealers are absolute toss but for the money the smiles per gallon factor is huge.

Subway, your a homo...

At Donny yours was only .6/.7 of a sec quicker to 1/8th mile. Considering you've stripped the bugger out, replace the seats with lighter buckets. Have an after market exhaust with decat. Replaced your 16's with 15's. Oh and almost forgot, you put in some Octane Booster in ya fuel.

Against mine, with filter and cat back exhaust. FF and still fully loaded with seats etc.

I'd say your in no position to give it the biggen (HOMO)!!!

MMMMmmhhhaaaaaaaaaaa, mmmmmmmmuuuuhhhhahaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!

I've had a 182 with both packs from new for 16 months and done 14k miles. I use it as my main car but only do about 25 miles a day commuting. Very pleased with the car and zero problems.

Interesting comments above as regards getting used to performance. For me it's not really the absolute acceleration or speed you're doing that counts but more how fast the car feels. If I get out of my 182 and get into a (proper, original) Mini Cooper S I find myself thinking that now I'm in a really fast / great handling car, then I look at the speedo and it's reading 15mph less that what I'm expecting. I'm guessing people are experiencing the same in reverse when they're testing the 197 in that the feel of the car is such that it's actually going faster than they perceive it to be. For driving fun I'd go with a car like a mini where you get the thrills with less chance of losing your licence, unless you get your kicks by playing at drag racing at traffic lights... ;)

I changed from a zetec s to my 182 a few months ago and love them both. If you're looking for something that's the same cup of tea but better, you won't go wrong with a 182. It's quicker, has better grip and more feedback through the steering but the ride is better (even the cup versions are comfy compared to the ZS which I always found very crashy). Only downside for me is the gearchange is rubbish compared to the fantastic ZS box, but then there aren't many cars with a shift that good. All the extra toys and the nice interior are a bonus. I haven't had any problems with mine yet and I'd say it has the feeling of a much more solid and quality product than the zs. Seems a lot of people have similar niggles (rattles, crap exhausts etc) but then if you ever looked for rust under the door seals on your fiesta or had to buy new wishbones every year because the bushings had failed again you'll know ford have a few issues of their own!
It can be a bit of a handful, you have to hang on to the wheel travelling over rough surfaces. But I had a lot more lairy oversteer moments in the ZS, and in the 182 you have ESP to help you out.

Overall, 182 is an absolute hoot to drive - if you like the fiesta but want something quicker and better equipped it's the obvious choice.
