Sorry to hijack this thread, but I've just found these in the house.

If I bought a DVR (eg this one with a wireless adaptor http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252714040...49&var=551908838387&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT) would it work alright?

  A special one.
Guys I'm after a CCTV set up but I only need 1 good camera to watch the cars on the drive.
I had a look in Maplin and after speaking to a sales guy he recommended this.

Now as you can probably tell I know fcuk all so any help will be great.

Picture quality on this combination is about as good as you can get without going crazy money with ip cams and even still its hard to tell the difference its that good.Really easy to use and setting up viewing on your mob is simple.

I use HikVision cameras (POE) using a mini PC as a server (recorder).

Just don't

I do this for a living

HIKvision or Dahua

Id be looking at little NVR, with at least 3/4MP cameras at a minimum these days. Longs you can make an Rj45 plug get an nvr with built in POE and it's plug & play really, no need for servers etc

Swann are w**k, more obvious at night, poor infrared, rubbish chipsets...... just poor DIY quality

Just ask yourself what's the point in buying a cheap camera system? Yes you might see something happening, but if you can't identify, it's worthless?

People see cheap stuff on the net, not worth buying just spend a bit extra and get decent stuff as Gaz says. Hik or Dahua.....

Thank you mate, I appreciate that. In the shop that set up looked fine but I'm glad I asked before buying.

I'll look into the stuff you've recommend.
Can I buy the stuff from anyone on the net or is there any links to the stuff I need?

You can see why people go for stuff like the Swann kit, Hikvision have a huge array of cameras.

Its real easy to get confused with all the stuff they offer.

I have a hikvision NVR and a few Chinese cameras, they work a treat. my dome camera is really good quality, ill post up the make later. but I have just moved house a need two more domes

I have recently bought the below items from the website USE-IP, the camera with a 4mm lens. Very impressed, easy to use, reliable, impressive image quality. A few friends have bought the same setup from the same shop (as said you can get lost in the large range of products). Just add a HDD.
Hikvision DS-7604NI-K1-4P
and
Hikvision DS-2CD2355FWD-I

I know this probably sounds daft and obvious but my cameras are 1080p and I was given some old crappy monitor to view them on. Is this actually affecting the quality? If I bought a much better monitor, would the picture be much clearer?

  A blue one.
Just fitted a UniFi G3 Pro to the front of the house, very impressed. (As I always am with Ubiquiti equipment). Proper solid unit.

Wife wants one on the back of the house now, I need to get another POE switch now!
