Any idea why insurance quotes on 172s & 182s doubled overnight for me?

Hi there,
For the past month or so I've had my eye on a certain 182 currently for sale in the cars for sale section. A month ago when i did a quick insurance quote on go compare (for a general idea, nothing set in stone yet) the quotes came in at just under the £1k mark (20yo guy working in a bar, the only saviour is my postcode!). This was fine and all, I had even got several more quotes over the next fortnight to make sure it wasn't a mistake.

Fastforward to now, just got quotes for both the aforementioned 182 ff and a 172 cup, and both are £2k all of a sudden. There have been no changes to my details, still have my no-claims and no speeding tickets or anything. On top of this, quotes for other cars (my current 1.2, an mx5 1.8, Volvo T5 S50 and Subaru Legacy) have all stayed within £50 of the quotes I got at the same time as the original 182 quote.

Anyone have any idea why the 182 insurance prices have doubled? I'm really hoping its just a temporary thing

Be so many days surely

Yeah, saying it happened overnight was a bit inaccurate of me, wasn't really thinking about it when I posted this. Even so, for the prices to double when nothing has changed in only a month seems ridiculous. I'll give admiral a call to get a quote from them (they had the cheapest quote last time) to see if they'll honour it, my guess is they wont though

Can't see a 20yo with say 3 years no claims getting insured for £1000 or less.

Somewhere around £1500 would be reasonable (not that it seems like it) from an insurers point of view.

that's how it works. if you don't take the quote up there and then after a day or two it jumps up. the perils of online quotes.

If you have the time ring round for quotes instead, comparison websites are just another way of getting shafted in my view.

I spoke to Neil @greenlight and he said that insurance was potentially going up from beginning of Jan. I got mine secured before then, but this could also explain the rise.

Try adding a family member to the policy, even if they aren't ever likely to use the vehicle - that can often bring a quote down.

I would agree with you except it is only happening to 172s and 182s - At the same time I got quotes for an NB MX5, Legacy 2.5 and a Volvo S60 T5, in all of these cases insurance quotes are the same today as they were two months ago

Hi,
Please feel free to give us a try for insurance if you like. If you wanted to PM me some contact details I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.
Regards,
Dan.

Total opposite I’ve been finding prices have dramatically dropped for me. I’m 25 with 5 years ncb, good post code, no points.
Paid £62 a month until 2 days ago with Hastings and I’ve just renewed with Hastings again for £34 a month fully comp with £32 deposit. I was wanting to ask on here why insurance has dropped dramatically ‍♂️

Hastings don't cover mods which is a shame
