Clio 182 - road car / track car / race car

  Twingo 133 Cup,
Cheers, tbh at times I feel like I’m talking to myself 😂

Next up is new pads and discs for the front, alignment/corner weighting, MOT and finish all the little bits. My aim is to put a few road miles on it and then a trackday (or evening) at Bedford in preparation for the Ring trackday in October.

After that I literally want to use it as much as possible!

Cheers
Think we all feel like we talk to ourselves on build threads tbh at times. I definitely do building my little odd ball.
Fingers crossed for you for October as thins are still up in the air with travel.

Fantastic to see this coming together so well, amazing attention to the detail. Love the Ly wheels but especially how clean it all looks in terms of build and finish. Loves a good build thread!
Cheers! I try to have a good attention to detail but I also do a good job of hiding the rusty bolts with camera angles 😂 The LY looks better in real life TBH and should look even better on a race track and not on my drive! Cheers again

There’s a lot to read! My aim was to go to the Clio festival this year but I’ll aim for next year now. It’s still has two seats so anyone’s welcome at any trackday tbh. There’s a lot faster and better ones out there and they’re probably better driven 😂. Cheers

Great to see this come back together so quickly, it feels so positive when it is back down on its wheels doesn't it.
Love the look of it on the TD's, they sit so well in the arches.... the colour of the 2118's thought is spot on...

Cheers! Yeah now it’s looking like a car again it definatly re lights the desire to get it finished.

I was a bit worried about the 2118 colour but it’s a track car so colours are allowed?!

Agreed... personally way prefer the TD's though. What the sizing/offset on them? - they fit so well

I don’t know the offset without looking tbh. They’re 16’ and off of the blue car I raced. I bought them off of Russ who owns the blue car. They look big at the front atm as the 20mm spacer is still on there from the 15’ wheels.

I thought they might be 16’s. That will be why they look like they are filling the arch. A 20mm spacer on mine caused rubbing.

inspiration to get on with mine for sure! And
You defo need this printed by 21ten / @Nafoff

He has done all this work way too quickly, lol.

i like you as a personal cheerleader 😜,
But I do agree, this would look great as an illustration./print

A couple of updates but no progress with the actual Clio of sorts. That hasn’t moved but...

The silver 16’ TD1.2s are sold. This wasn’t planned but the intention was to put some rainsports on them. A set of Oz F1s came up having just been refurbished and with brand new rainsports on them so a deal was done and an exchange will happen shortly.

Next up the brake bleeding issue. Rightly or wrongly I’ve purchased a brand new RS Tuner with the ABS and airbag module. A couple of reasons why, I will need to trigger the ABS again in the future not just this time, I don’t have an old enough laptop for clip and there are a few other reasons. Sadly it’s taken a few weeks to arrive but it should be here this week so I can prep the car for MOT.

Lastly the tow car has a tow bar! Spent today fitting it. It wasn’t cheap but is fully integrated. I have no issue working on the Clio but it was nerve-racking working on a newer more expensive car 😳.

RS Tuner arrived at long last 🙄 But the good news is it’s exactly what I needed. With the wife in the car activating the solenoids and pressing the pedal and me outside collecting the fluid the bubbles gushed out! Now I have a very firm brake pedal 😀

With the car then on the floor I only drove it for the first time in a year! Just turned it around at the end of the road. Videos on Instagram @CS_182

Another big little piece of the jigsaw arrived today. After months of looking I finally in possession of a 1.2 bulkhead heat shield. To say I’m over the moon is an understatement! Thanks to @Mbeau who I managed to message within 1 minute of him listing a 1.2 for breaking!

So there’s lots of little jobs including swapping out the remaining bolts I want to change....

Awesome work mate,
Also in a similar boat with regards to tax/insurance and MOT.

Just checking, do you run a single wiper, and if so how? (what mech etc)

I went with DS1.11s again as I rate them and they lasted well. I’ve also changed the pins and sliders.

I’ve also started fitting back the plastic wheel arch liner guards as well

Just checked on the insurance and I was surprised to be quoted £249 fully comp with all mods declared. The joys of being old 😂

Ticking the jobs off the list ready for the MOT.

First up I now have no airbag light on because I’ve obviously got all the airbags working.......

Next up I remapped the car with RS tuner. Must say the cold idle is massively improved.

The windscreen washer is back up and running for the first time in 3 years.

I’ve finally got around to fitting the manual mirrors I’ve had for a year.

Spent some time today removing all the internal material from the doors.

The under tray is back on. It was always teck screwed on since I’ve had the car. I’ve put fresh clinch nuts in all round. I’ve also purchased some 75mm bungs as my cap was missing.

There is still a good amount of weight in them doors to come out! I have managed to get 10kg out of each of the Twingo ones.
I like your work it's clean and tidy (y)

Yeah but this car sits between race car, garage queen, fake race car, a beat up old Clio, a track car and many other things but ultimately a car I care about so it’s always a compromise. Remember I’ve driven a rattly old 182 race car and I’d rather sacrifice 0.1s a lap and lug around a few extra KGs to feel relatively comfortable and secure.

This week i’m fitting and checking a few little things ready for the MOT. I’m working through a list in preparation. I think it’s all ready 🤞

I’ve sourced some internal covers for the manual mirrors to help keep the interior tidy.

The Clio’s off for some final items at the mechanics (i’ll elaborate when it’s back) and MOT on Mon/Tues next week. Today I insured it and taxed it again.

Importantly the shake down trackday is booked. Bedford 3rd August. There’s nothing like a deadline to focus the mind!

So this is the week I should be able to use the Clio as a road car again.

Today I’ve set about the final prep for it going for some finishing bits at the mechanics tomorrow and an MOT on Tuesday.

I’ve managed to source some terminal covers for the battery at last incase anything falls on it.

Next up I finally picked up my third set of wheels. These are the wet/road wheels. They have brand new rainsport 3s and have just been refurbished in gloss black. I’ve managed to source some black centre caps with yellow writing to match the car.

So let’s see what the week brings us. I’m sure it’s not going to be cheep but after 17 months I should be able to drive my Clio again 🤞

I drove the Clio today and....

It only drove absolutely spot on!

No rattles, no banging, went in all the gears, idles, stops, it even goes in a strait line after having all 4 corners removed, happy days!

EPAS is working well atm which is also a relief.

It’s going to be an interesting week waiting for it to come back but I’m looking forward to it’s return

So the last few weeks have been tough with regards the Clio. I've had a couple of issues. With work back up to full speed I simply haven't had times to address the issues. The main issue were the car had developed a couple of leaks. One was the end cap on the gearbox and the other one seemed to be between the engine and gearbox. To say I was gutted was an understatement because it pointed at the rear main seal needing changing which means splitting the engine/gearbox

b0ccd2e4-9455-47cf-a90d-3fab6b1195ff.JPG

Last week the car made it's first journey (6 miles) over to the mechanics to have these issues address, an MOT and full alignment. Whilst the car drove spot on when I got there the dash was lit up like a Christmas tree! I'll abbreviate a few bits but after a stressful week of coming and going the following was fixed -

ABS light & service light - I incorrectly installed the steering wheel angle sensor so on the first proper trip it broke it. A second hand next day delivery item fixed this.

Airbag light & yellow service light - Massive thankyou to @GrahamS who sent on a new airbag ECU which was configured to my car so the airbag light works to pass the MOT.....

The big oil leak........... turns out I'm an idiot and didn't seat the new sump gasket properly. The sump was taken off. A few mods were made and then it was refitted. There is no leak on the main seal. What a relief!!!!

The gearbox end cover was exchanged with a brand new OEM item.

Nearside drive shaft was old and tiered so whilst it was all apart I exchanged this with a slightly shorter one on the advice of Mark (Northloop). Turns out my old one was also banging on the new diff on tight left lock.

So after a couple of sleepless night the Clio went for its MOT and only passed!

I've now had it back a couple of days have managed a few miles on it. It's feeling good, still a terrible road car as its too stiff! Battery is working, Diff is working, EPAS is working, touch wood everything is working!

I’m booked on at Bedford this Monday. The only item remaining is to install a shift light which I’ll pop in tomorrow.

Let’s see how it goes, expect the worse and be happy with anything better……

Last prep today. The weather forecast has been forecasting rain for Monday’s trackday but over the last couple of days this has changed to a dry forecast. Happy days as I can take these two sets of wheels and leave the rainsports at home.

I’ve changed out the coil pack as a preventative precaution. I’ve got to say the car is idling better

Nice final mod to make was the addition of a shift light. It was simple to install and simple to adjust. I’m well impressed. Hopefully this video works....

Bedford 3rd August - the good...

We set off Sunday to Bedford which is circa 80 miles from my house. I went cross country to give the car a little work out. My in-laws now live 6 miles away which is handy so we made camp there.

The journey up was uneventful. When I got there I had a little check over the car and even gave it a wash before tucking it away for the night.

The weather was perfect for the trackday. When the car worked it was awesome. It feels a lot more nimble on its feet, the brakes are still phenomenal, the engines has more power/response and the diff.......... is a game changer! Normally I’m waiting forever to apply the power coming out of the tight hairpins at Bedford but now it’s full power with the car turning with the diff and not washing out towards the other side of the track. Happy days!!

I had dinner back at the in-laws and then set off home with the dog. Car made it home in one piece and has now knocked out 100,000 miles

The clio's all cleaned and ticked up ready for it's next outing

Looking very good sir! Where did you mount the front tow straps? I'm still working out a plan for them.
TBH I can’t remember. I thought I had a photo but I don’t. I’ll have a look when I get a min. Mine are a little to long. I’ve kinked them slightly and cables tied them so the hoop is just hanging out of the bumper. If I need to use them then they will snap as they’re thin ties.

Bedford 3rd August - the bad...

Note - I'll always be honest even when it goes wrong (It has taken a month to write this!). Hopefully people can learn from my mistakes as I've learnt from others

Without doubt the worst track day I've done and that includes the one where the engine blew up on the first lap!

As mentioned above I made my way up from only 6 miles away which was nice. Missed the sighting laps whilst prepping a few things. Once I was ready I went out on my first laps with a lot of apprehension and at the first corner the back tried to swap ends with me. A little confusing but I put it down to the new set up and cold tyres etc. Got to the hairpin onto the back straight and it happened again.

I slowly drove the car back to pits where I was met by another driver saying liquid was gushing from the back of the car. Didn't take long to work out this was fuel!!

C10A136D-8041-49AE-A6D9-2C0EDD188945.jpeg

I took the car over to the trailer area and jacked it up to find fuel everywhere. This puzzled me for 1 minute...…. until I took the fuel pump cover off and found a puddle of fuel above the fuel pump. I tried to remove the pump but didn't have the right tools. Fair play to the MSV mechanics in the big warehouse who lent me some massive grips. Turns out for some reason I'd left out the rubber O ring. I don't know how this happened but it did. My mates with the race cars had brought the race van so the only option was to silicone the cap in and let it dry (obviously I didn't have a spare O ring). This took time and with pretty much the whole morning gone I ventured back out.

Excellent the Clio now was handling as it should do...……….. for one lap when the front wheel arch liner bracket started fouling the wheel. Another trip to the pits and this soon got bent out the way.

Third time lucky and low and behold the Clio worked fine for the three laps mentioned above, happy days!

I only did a few laps as I wanted to check everything after the morning issues and the fact this car has literally been rebuilt. All look well so we had lunch and I looked forward to finally starting to turn some proper speed around the track in the afternoon.

Lunch done and out we go. The Clio's feeling good and we're warming up until braking into the hairpin at the end of the back straight when during heavy braking the Clio lurches right and the steering drops to the left.

Driving the car back it felt horrible. I got back to the pits and I'm met with the two front wheels pointing at each other. The other wheel is straight in this photo

1041B4B2-3DF5-408F-BF22-A9BB1146B6CB.jpeg

I'll abbreviate a lot here but basically the rear camber adjustment bushes I run had moved. I couldn't move them so to combat this I shortened the steering rack arm. Not ideal but I need to drive the car home remember!

78D61C65-5DA9-4D26-97B9-F20BA6B5B0C7.jpeg

To the eye it looked good but I know ultimately it's not ideal. All this messing around left me with 30 mins of the trackday left. Remembering the car is out next at the Ring I took it back out just to put some miles on it remembering it had a new gearbox, clutch, etc etc. One more gentle lap and guess what...….. same again!

Toys out the pram time and I packed up and went to the in-laws for dinner. After dinner I drove it home gently and parked it. It drove like s**t.

After washing it the following day I pretty much knew what was wrong. Remembering i'm not a mechanic, race car builder etc I didn't clear the powder coating off of the subframe etc where the suspension mounted. School boy error!

With my head not in it, family holiday, 3 weeks solid working in Ireland and generally no time due to family and work I parked it and contemplated setting fire to it (I almost did this at Bedford ironically!)

Fast forward a month and I took it to the mechanics again to have all the bits removed, cleaned up and the alignment re done. I can't tell you how happy I am to have to spend money on re doing what I should have done correctly in the first place!

9E40EA16-3FF9-48ED-84B1-C467851F076E.jpeg

Drive over to the mechanics (8 miles) and I can't be arsed with it TBH.

However I picked it up and it didn't take long to relise with the wheels pointing in the right direction this little car awsome!!

So its back and more great news................................ the Ring trip is off. I can't justify it ATM with COVID, the bloody F1 booking the day before so no tourest days before the trackday and taking a still unproven car but........................

I'm off to Snetterton 12th October and it's a track I can't wait to drive in this car. Remember I did a track day and a race in the blue Clio but at this time the blue Clio didn't have many fancy bits on it. I really enjoyed the track so can't wait to take C5EAD and finally put some decent miles on it (if it doesn't rain and it works!)

Trackcars = emotional roller coasters*

*and money pits
