Clio 182 - road car / track car / race car

  Clio 172
Sorry to hear you’ve had a rough time with the car. Got to look at the positives though... at least you found out now and not on the Ring. And it’s not too much of an expensive fix.

I’m sure Snetterton will be great! You’re not far away from me at all (and even closer when I eventually move). Hopefully see C5EAD at a track soon.

Looking very good sir! Where did you mount the front tow straps? I'm still working out a plan for them.

Just been out to it. From memory I drilled the hole for the overly long bolt on each side. Short straps would be better

Snetterton’s a week today and there’s a few items to get on top of this weeks. First up the water leaks 😳🤬

Before the rebuild I had zero water leaks so after changing all the pipes to silicon, new header tank, new radiator and new Mikalor clips I expected zero leaks. Turns out the Mikalor clips are s**t as they’re to wide to clamp on the turned edges of the hard pipes so I invested in a new set of the ST ST jubilee clips.

Read this a few times on the mikalor clamps now! Might be worth updating the guide on here so other people arent caught out.

I've ordered the JCS Higrips.

Preps going well for Monday. The DS1.11 are back in and the de - cat is back on. What a difference that makes! The cars washed. I took it up the road and the waters staying in the engine for a change!

I’ve taken the paint off of where the wheel nuts hold the wheels on. School boy error as I didn’t do this with the 2118s and they came a little loose last time out.

Two small jobs to complete. I’m waiting for some 80mm ducting to arrive (due tomorrow) to finish up the brake ducts with the new turning bends. I’ve put the clinch nuts in ready just to pop it in.

A brand new fuel pump seal arrived today to replace the missing one. I’ll remove all the temporary silicone before this goes on.

Weather currently looks a little iffy but looking at the F1 today I’m happy we made the decision not to go to the Ring ATM!

The brake duct idea didn’t work so I sacked that off and just resorted back to what I’ve been running which to be fair has never caused me any issues.

Last job was to replace the fuel pump seal. Borrowed these grips of a mate. They just became my new fav tool as the cap came off so easily

We went up to Snetterton on Sunday and after the disasters of the last trackday I didn’t want to drive the Clio up so splashed out on this.

This was an absolute game changer. The trip up was so pleasant and stress free. Shame it cost a lot but for this one it was worth the money.

Mikalor clips are for boost pipes and exhausts! Like you say to wife for coolant applications.
Car looks really good 👌🏻

Exactly.

The clio I got recently had mikalor clamps for the induction pipework, totally pointless. The clamp on the throttle body was so wide it sat on top of the bead and you could just pull the hose off!

Snetterton 12th Oct

After the Bedford disaster I was fairly apprehensive above this one TBH. Being 2 miles around the corner was nice. The Clio was unloaded and I completed a few final checks and off we set on the siting laps with no issues. The track was slippy with overnight dew/rain. The first couple of sessions were short as I wanted to make sure everything was alright. I lost a bit of the brake duct but no big problems.
1075E60B-7EFE-4B27-BC4E-A10D2A77D2F6.jpeg

The track dried out a bit and the car was still working so the pace kept coming until I noticed the ABS light was on. Back to the pits and luckily I’d brought my laptop with RS Tuner on it which said the front right sensor was reading incorrectly. Initially I couldn’t reset it so I spent time taking it all apart and checking the connections. I managed to reset it then but it was lunch so filled the car up with another 20 litres of fuel.
B3191223-E4F8-49E4-B928-AEED91BCEF79.jpeg

Then what happed was the best prolonged hours of driving I’ve ever had in the car!

Lunch done and out I went and pretty much kept going and going and going only stopping for fuel and the odd check. The car was faultless to the point I had to then come in to fill up after burning through the 20 litres of fuel I put in at lunch!
2C3A0DD8-1EE3-4509-B1C2-F413097F41A2.jpeg

Not only did the car work it was the best it’s ever been. The diff is a game changer. The shorter 5th gear is ideal. The engines pulling stronger than ever thanks to the port & polish on the inlet and the remap. The EPAS works with no faults (I do have it turned down a lot on track). The car feels tighter than ever having had the rear beam stiffened.
47921EBD-C171-4675-853E-A1251DBF086E.jpeg

I didn’t swap over to the slicks as there was rain forecast from 4pm onwards and tbh the AR1s were working well enough. The rain did come and at that point I knocked it on the head as I still had to get home and then get the van back to the depo.
3894A23D-1954-45FA-A774-26750040CD96.jpeg

The ABS light did come back on. Cycling the power fixed it. Looking at the front wheels at the end of the day it looks like my drivers side CV joint cover has failed. I think the oil’s on the sensor giving a miss reading as the sensor has been replaced since I’ve had the car so should be ok.
7E3A91A9-B304-4FB7-AED2-3E8A43A1019D.jpeg

So apart from a CV joint cover I have a car that’s filthy and wet but ultimately ready to go again and is now at home safe and sound. At the moment I couldn’t ask for more and after a long hard 18 months I’m in a happy place and looking forward to the next outing 😁

Do you mind sharing how much to hire the transporter was ? This looks a lot better than a trailer and don’t have to run around in a big car to use to tow a trailer 8 times a year. Pm if you prefer.

No problem, I hired it from here -

I can’t say how good this one was. It had the electric winch, the bed was great as the straps stayed attached whilst you can drive the car on. Also had a fair turn of speed......

I opted for damage waiver at £9 a day extra. Obviously you have to fuel it. You can go unlimited millage (extra) or you get 100 miles per day with extra miles at 11ppm. The day rate is on the link.

The van itself was mint. Was a 68 plate but was immaculate and clean with 48k on the clock. Some I look at were knackered out transits. This was worth a little extra.

It did cost a bit more for me as I hired it for two days (Sun & Mon). I was allowed to pick it up at 14.30 on sat and although I dropped it of out of hours Monday it didn’t need to be back until 08.30 Tuesday.

Next time I’d avoid a Monday trackday as it’ll half the cost. So for a trackday Wednesday I could pick it up at close of place Tuesday and return it before 08.30 Thursday.

Also the drive home was in torrential rain. If I drove the car back it would have been rubbish and slow. Towing the car would have been hard work as there were big puddles on the motorway. With this I was going 70 (ish 😉) all the way in comfort not worrying about the car or towing a trailer.

Making the most of the car this week. It’s been on daily duties still covered in grime.

Today out came the snow foam and some elbow grease to get her back up to a good standard before I tucked her away ready for the next trackday which fingers crossed might be before the end of the year.....

The Clio’s still tucked away. I’ve got an oil leak to address. It might involve open heart surgery but I’ve a few bits to check/change before I commit to that 🙄

The good news is I’ve booked onto Silverstone December 5th (if we’re not in lockdown).

But the better new is I’ve purchased another car and it’s an absolute beast......

When I raced in the MSV TDT I did enjoy it but didn’t like the endless budget required just to be able to compete relatively competitively in what’s meant to be a low level of motorsport. Step forward the KA to compete in the EnduroKA series. Standardised parts with plenty of track time. I’m looking forward to building this and racing agin with a couple of good mates 😁

Ford ka is dangerous , rememeber almost putting one on its roof going around a mini roundabout 😂😂

This one (Pistonheads team) crashed in quali and still went on to finish 2nd at the weekend.

I was a delivery driver at Ford when they came out (I’m very old!) and had many a fun drive in them. They are what they are. It’s going to make the Clio feel fast....

The end...………...

Sadly the time has come to move on from the Clio. Without doubt the best car experience I've had and I've had some good cars. I made the decision back in November but wanted to make sure it wasn't a kneejerk decision. I was going to start taking it apart in February but without advertising I've already sold the bonnet, boot, windows, EPAS, seats, harnesses and a few other bits.

I have no regrets and wouldn't change anything (apart from using it more!) but in the time I've had it my circumstance's have changed massively (nothing bad! just I have children I want to spend more time with and have a car they can come in).

So on Saturday I'll pull it out one last time so I can turn it around, put it on axle stands and start removing the parts, If you've followed this thread then you'll know there are some amazing parts on the car. I've never settled for second best. If you have seen anything you require then DM and we can talk money etc. I won't start the full media campaign for a few weeks. Once the bits of gone there is a good condition 182 shell with a Mark Fish installed safety devices cage in it.

So here it is, so long C5EAD/GF05LWT, it's been one hell of a adventure :)

I'm already down to the last two big items for the Clio. Both are listed in the for sale section on here. First up the engine. The engine has been so good to me. It'd be nice to find it a good home. It's a strong little donkey -

Then of course the shell. If you've read through the last 10 pages of this thread you'll see the hours and hours, days and days and weeks and weeks of work that's gone into this. This shell would make a perfect track car, race car or even a road car. It'll be around for many years to come with all the fettling it's had. Don't be like me and spend hours prepping the underneath of your car when you can buy this one that's done ……...

I'll update once these bits have gone and with future plans...…...

Gutted ☹️

I’ll sum it up in few days but I’m now no longer the owner of my Clio. Still onwards and upwards.....

So last Thursday the shell & engine were picked up by their new owner bringing an end to my ownership of the Clio. It's all been a little strange the last few weeks but in a good way. Every single nut and bolt has now gone apart from one brake line. That's not bad in 3 weeks.

A few things to note -

  • I hardly had to advertise anything. Word of mouth worked well
  • Facebook market place is the new wild wild West of selling!
  • Selling items in packages worked well. (Example exhaust went with all the hangers, clips, bolts etc)
  • I made more money than I thought I could ever make
  • I enjoyed taking it apart as it brought back many happy memories
  • I didn't get messed around once
  • The cat sold for £410!!!
As for the shell & engine - they're off to race in the 750 Ktec Clio championship. For me a bit of a strange choice as the cage needs adapting to be eligible but the man paid the money I wanted so I'm happy

Here's a few photos of it before it went -

I have no regrets. I've learnt so much about cars and how to get the best out of them. Power isn't everything!

One last thing..... the tittle of the thread..

Clio 182 - road car / track car / race car

Road car - complete
Track car - Spent 4 years doing that
Race car - It's now going to be a race car and I raced a 182 race car

In around about way I'm saying mission complete

Stay safe and have fun, I'll update on the new car (when I can afford it) which will hopefully make sense of why I sold this after spending most of last year rebuilding it!

Cheers

Chris

I’ve got to admit I thought I was mental taking the Clio apart after spending so much time on it last year but......... I had one aim and that was to buy what for me is my dream car (without winning the lottery).

Happily today I picked it up. Here is my 996 C4s manual in black.

I’m literally over the moon as it’s been along wait to get one. It was hard sourcing one when I was determined to get a black/black one. As you can see this one doesn’t have the black interior but I managed to purchase it for a price I’m happy with allowing me to source a full black interior. Already I’ve sourced many parts to change it over.

It’s done 84k and has an incredible history port folio with it. It also came with all these OEM parts as well as a cover and a CTEX trickle charger.....

sorry to dig this up but I was googling Clio PRG Mini Sport and this popped up. Looks like you had massive issues fitting yours? Is that only because of your brakes and spacers (worth me bearing in mind as I was looking at Brembo's)

Biggest advice would be just buy a bigger trailer. It’s an utter PITA. Nothing more annoying than messing around at the end of a trackday getting it on. Even with a normal width clio it would be tight.

Also towing was poor as it it was affected by the ‘tram lines’ in lane 1 on the motorway. Just get a wider.
