Renault meets Ford

Had a little google for ideas of what to do with my car mod wise. Spotted an article of a guy that has apparently put a 2.5l Ford/Volvo Duratec Turbo engine in his Mk1 (the engine on the Focus ST).
According to the article, through small but significant improvements to the engine, it is pushing out close to 300 bhp.
Well, after reading that, I must admit it got me thinking like Andy from Little Britian, 'I want that one'
Had a wee browse in various places online and you can pick one up as low as a grand and a half. Ebay even has one for 2.5k or best offers.

I'm as bit confused because Ford has used the "Duratec" name on a whole lot of completely different engines, and it names its models slightly differently in this country.

If you're talking about the 2.5 litre Duratec it was a V6 that went in the Mondeo last time I looked. And it won't either produce 300 bhp or fit in a Clio.

If you're talking about the Ford/Volvo 2.5 litre Turbo you probably could get 300 bhp out of it. But as sure as hell its not going to fit in the front of a Clio because its an in-line 5 cylinder. Its too long. Remember the Clio can't even fit a decent gearbox - one tough enough to take the power of a turboed 2 litre - in the engine bay with a 4 cylinder Renault engine. They had to widen the Mk3 to the width of the Megane to fit a Nissan box in that'd take the torque.

There is a nice compact Ford 2.0 litre four - designed by Mazda - that might fit, and it comes in 2.3 litre version, and a remarkably muscular turbo version in the Mazda6 Mazda3 MPS models. Companies like Caterham have jumped on it because of its light weight and good tuning potential. But its not a 2.5.

So if you buy a "Duratec 2.5" on eBay make sure you're getting what you really think you're getting.

The 5 pot engine not that small would be a tight fit in the Clio as its a wide engine.

290hp can be done with a VAG engine and a remap (use the big tiurbo 225/210 models though) thats a better root to go down as there more bits for it.

Ok, I will look into that then. What model engine and anything else I will need (loom etc).

1.8T Engine - Audi TT, Audi A3, Golf GTi T, Seat Leon Cupra, The Audi TT and the Seat Cupra R are available in 225 Versions, The Golf GTi has 150bhp, and is probably the one to avoid. The Audi S3 has one of the better engines although its just trying to find one.

Thanks for the info folks. Winter is here and negiotating with the council about a lock up, preferably with electric.
Once the project is started, I'll start a regular post

Right, well up to now I have contacted all the places I can on the web that source engines and also joined a few VW/Audi Clubs etc but to no avail.
On the plus side, I have now got a competition intercooler of an EVO but without the engine it is pretty hopeless. Hope something turns up before Chrimbo.
