which oil do renault use as standard on a 182?

Renault (chelmsford) put Shell Helix 10w40 in mine at its 60k service. :banghead: . Why I service it myslef now, dont bother with Renault, just the thought of them slamming my bonnet makes me cringe.

The guy I brought it from used to live in Chelmsford its says shell helix 10/40w on the invoice Ive got.

Renault quote that 10-40 is fine so long as outside temsp don't drop below -20 so there fine its better to use 5-40 though

I can't understand all this fuss people make when they discover that the "wrong brand" has been used in their car. Is there such thing?

Fair enough make sure its 5W 40 or as Edde says make sure you don't live in Siberia if its 10W 40 but all this brand snobbery is a bit strange.
I will admit that i'd tend to steer clear of say Halfords own brand if i have to buy oil, but I use Shell Helix Ultra in mine (as i get it for free from work ,where we put it in the Loti, Subaru's and Saabs) and have never had any reason to think "oh no, its the wrong stuff!"

So is there some kind of proven scientific evidence to suggest that certain brand oils are obviously better than others?
I hear the name Silkolene bandied about alot as if its some kind of super oil....how so?

i'm wih ollie on this, for all our customers cars we use elf excellium

but my own personal cars get whatever is cheapest put in

Thats the way i've usually looked at it! I get mine for nothing and as i change mine more than the service schedule suggests...well about 4k earlier actually, it saves me a hell of alot of money. £8 for a oil and filter change anyone?

So whats with Silkolene? Is it specially extracted from the Sultan of Brunei's own private garden oil well or something?

the halfords stuff will be made by a rputable company..
infact i think the halfords stuff could even be made by shell.. ha

oh btw everyone at my work uses some BP global c5/6 as thats what we use in our cranes.. its expensive!

now i believe we've started using some castrol stuff which is even more expensive. free oil changes rule

i only ever used excellium in the 182 and havent doen an oil change on the vx yet.


i'll be puttign the castrol/bp stuff we have at work in my clio diesel though..

Ahh so there we have it...thats just blown my bit of oil snobbery right out of the water!

Its all very much the same as fuel production obviously...supermarket fuel being made by the big brand boys.
Its mainly psychological when it comes down to what to use both oil and fuel wise, although with fuel there are obvious gains/losses that come from using different brands.

I know i've never strayed from using V-power but then i've seen and felt the results of using it.....my oil barely changes colour between changes.
But oil? Much of a muchness surely...

Can you tell i've thought about this alot??

Oh and yeah...free oil rules.

Excellium is to be no more soon, being replaced by better in the next few months.
I will be stocking it.

Its mainly psychological when it comes down to what to use both oil and fuel wise, although with fuel there are obvious gains/losses that come from using different brands.

Some oils are much better than other usualy in ithe case of track cars for example Vauxhall normal oil (the stuff they use at servicing) in my Williams used to go black and cook almost instantly on track. Millers oil didn't chnage colour it was fine. For most cars and uses there no need to spend the extra money cna be better spent changing it more.

Yeah i suppose if you are tracking the car alot with lots of high loads being put through the engine for sustained periods of time then a decent racing bred oil would be much more beneficial.
