Oil change soon...

I've been told so many times by ReNo so called "engineers" that I should use 10-40 Oil.
But looking on cup172.co.uk it says 5-40....

Which one is it?!?!

Also, i really want some top quality oil... Price dosen't matter...

Any ideas??!

5- 40W mate although which brand you use is not make or break for your engine so don't go fretting that Silkolene or something equally as expensive is the only oil you should use.

Mobil 1, Shell Helix, Duckhams or even your run of the mill Halfords stuff (made by a big brand oil company anyway) will do nicely. Just as long as the grade is right.

I wouldn't recommended cheap oil, at the end of the day, that oil is going to be in there a while, and it's damn important, it's worth spending that extra fiver or whatever.

Sign up there ^ you'll probably find you can get the decent oil the same price as cheaper stuff at your local shop.

"Cheap" oil is made by the same people as expensive oil...just lacks the branding. Plus if its gonna be changed more often than the service schedule recommends then its gonna save a hell of a lot of money buying a cheaper oil which does roughly the same job.

More frequent changes rather than hugely expensive oil is the way to go but thats just my opinion.

Edde has said though that if you are gonna be tracking the car alot then a more robust racing bred oil will be essential.

That's the proper s**t....expensive at £50 but you can't take short cuts with oil.

5-40 or 10-40 doesn't realy matter the probelm is 10-40 "only" protects down to -20 degrees so if outside temsp will be lower the oil ins't protecting as its to thick.

I'd have no worries about using either. Renault say 5-40 as it will in theoery be better on the engine when its cold and best if the engine being used for very short journeys when the cars not getting utpot temp but I woulnd't ever worry 10-540 is fine for the UK climite.

I'd use Millers 5-40 as its great stuff takes a load of buse and I realy drive cars hard but for moet people elf pro silkine is more than enough cnhage it ever 6k.

ACEA A2- 96/ A3- 96 15W40 or 15W50.
Oils of 10- 40 and even as low as 0- 30 can
be used. 10- 40 is the most commly used
oil.
ACEA A1- 98 is the standard oil.
ACEA A1 is the oil for fuel economy in
10W10, 10W40 or 10W- 50.
For none EC companies API SH/ SJ 15W-
40, 15W- 50 is the spec you want. API SJ-
IL SAC GF2 standard

I provided Silkolene to the dealer for my service, but when I got back in the car there was a 1l bottle of the shell stuff on the passenger seat for top ups, very nice, probably won't be used but still :approve:

I'm with the Silkolene boys on this one.

Used it in my past 2 cars & will be changing to this as soon as the oil needs doing in the Clio.

Where does everyone get there oil from, is Oil man on this forum? I used to use the silkoline in my old saxo VTR couldnt fault the stuff, an even after every 5K when I changed it the oil was clear so showed how clean it was keeping my engine!

I went for the Silkolene as I don't do many miles (probably under 6k pa) and so will change it every year.....service on the 172 is every 12k anyway.

Well as i've said before on this subject you can take your Silkolene...i'll always rate the oil i use...its THE best stuff. Its called FREE OIL!

Its actually Shell Helix Ultra but i don't really give a monkeys what it is!
All the time i can change the oil on my car for under a tenner i will be a happy camper.
