CV Joint

  Audi TT 225
I posted yesterday about green sludge inside one of my rims
http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=215939

Heres the photo's of the CV joint, obviously the source of the grease, does this look like a re-grease and re-seal job?
Im assuming it should be attached further to the right?
The boot doesn't look damaged either..

That definately looks as if it has popped off. Can you move the boot back towards the gear box by hand exposing the CV joint? If so, simply re-grease and have it re-sealed if the joint isn't split.

Not tried to move it I'll have a go tomorrow. What noise would it make? Do you mean reseal if the rubber things not split?

The car wont be driven between now and going to the garage to be sorted along with a few other minor bits and bobs. Looks like a messy job so I cant be arsed to do it lol

It'd start to knock after a while on lock, when all the grease has left the actual joint.

The gaitors unlikely to be split, the garage should just re-pack the inside with CJ joint grease and put a new clip on it.

Seems like a pretty common problem , the clips aren't that strong , both of mine snapped on my 172 . When i bought my new 182 as soon as i got it home i put some 10mm cable ties over the gator clips , hopefully that will stop them snapping in the future . Just repack and stick some new clips on and it should be ok . I ran one of mine for a few weeks with the clip snapped and some grease lost and never had a problem .

Thats definitely slipped back from where it should be. You might have got away with that as you spotted it in time.

What can happen if its not detected in time is, all the grease is thrown out and the dirt from the road gets in and ruins the CV joint.

The metal clip thats supposed to hold that boot in place will only last, if its put on with the proper tool and the joint between the rubber boot and the drive shaft is clean and grease free.

Its not a job you want to do yourself, that grease is horrible stuff.

What exactly should I get from there? Im not gonna bother doing it but I wanna make sure my garage uses something tidy to secure it so I'll order it ready.

Yeah I know the grease is well nasty I got my hands covered in it trying to get it off my alloy. Used a good de-greaser today which shifted it like a dream.

Rich, all you can do is ask them if they have the proper tool and clips, and just give them the nod that you know what you are talking about and are capable of checking their work.

The guy that does my work down here is very decent and honest so Im sure he'll sort it out, my girlfriends nephew works there too so he doesn't mess me about and he knows I sorta know what Im on about because I always tell him what he needs to fix instead of asking whats wrong.

Called him earlier and he said £10-£15 to sort that out and check out my handbrake cable because I think one side might have snapped.
