Cigarette lighter wiring.

I'm shortly going to be wiring in a sat nav unit in the car and i'm going to take the power from the cigarette lighter socket (cos it's an easy place to get to, and it's not turned on unless the ignition is)

There's three wires going into it and I know one I need is the middle wire but which colour of the other two do I need? I'm guessing one is for the socket and one for the light but not sure which :S

Although i didnt butcher an extension lead cos Halfords have a kit they use for this but have to ask i think. Its pretty crappy looking but has the inline fuse holder and good conectors! Cost me £8ish

DO NOT TAKE APART THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER CABLE!!The wires are there for reason,dont forget it drops to 5volt for satnav so best advice would be buy a lead and female cigarette lighter plug.

I'm guessing it's the same on the MK2 PH3's? :S

...and that the fuse must go on the + ?

as far as i know the dash etc is the same.your right fuse on + so then the fuse would blow before current can damage item

Yeah thats exactly what did, the link i added above was purely for the wiring diagram for the 3 wires on the lighter in the car!

Lol @ my thickness "which is negative" I just take it from an earthed part lol

if your stuck id be happy to help... i wired a female ciggy connector off the main one... simple procedure...

the three wires are to do with the lighting of the cigeratte lighter, when your headlights are turned on or not etc...though that link prob says that
