I Darent Drive My 172 Now!!!

  RB 182
Just been reading about cambelts, i understand all about them working in the trade, but for some reason i thought it was 72k intervals, i forgot about the years!

Mines a May 2002....

:S

1st job tuesday, helloooooooo new belt!

Its prolly been asked 100s of times, but what else requires changing, and anyone got a book time?

Another question, how hard is it to drop the block out? I think ill be putting a clutch in it soon enough, so could kill two birds with one stone so to speak, obviously belt would be a piece of piss with block out, and could do abit of cleaning etc

Aux belt will want changing with it. I'd say dropping the lump is more hassle than its worth even if you have to change the clutch as its straighforward enough to do that with the engine in, just a pain.

If doing cam and clutch its easier if it comes out, just had mine in the same situation.
Shouldn't need to stop driving it in the mean time, just dont go spanking it at high rev's and putting heavy load on the engine.

^^ straight forward clutch lmao I dont think so! You would either have to take the box out the top or drop the sub frame and try and squeeze it out the bottom. I just spunked a big wad of cash getting this done.

If your worried about your cam belt then for gods sake dont take it over 4,000rpm. Its possible to drive quite sensibly and not take it over 3,000rpm.
If it were to snap its a new engine folks, which would be the cheeper option than trying to repair the old head afterwards!

If your doing both at once engine out I'd say its much easier plus as you said can clean up etc.

I assume you've the right tools though to do the job?

Aux belt should be done without question. You have to as you know remove it to do the cambelt and it should never be resused.

Nar deffo drop or take engine out over top for clucth and cambelt jus for easy sake.

Buy the gen aux belt kit with the idler and tensioner in it for like £40 rather than doing the tensioner on its own later on and if you buy it seperate its £120

what mileage should the belt be changed?

If you have no warently to fall back on then 60k and 4 year at most IMO they fail to a higher frequency after about this point why risk leaving till 72k/5 years as noone going to pay up at Renault just becasue you tested there warently which is now invalid anyway.
