drilling through sheared bolt on rear axle

can this be done?

the screw that attaches my shock to my axle has sheared off, have angle grinded it so its flat now.

can i just drill through it, making a new hole and just use a very secure bolt with locking nuts at either end?

or is it a case of fittin a new axle and bolts?

if i had made it down, i had an idea... but got stuck doing things

basically i thought drill it from the wheel side... then if its turned clockwise from that side (as in drilling through) it would unscrew the sheared off bit which would come out the other side...?

a stud extractor is like a drill bit but with a left hand thread on it ya drill a hole in the stud the use this it will screw in to your new hole and and once tight unscrew your stud

BUT BE CAREFULL THESE ARE OFTEN MADE FROM HARDER MATERIAL THEN THE STUD AND VERY HARD TO DRILL IF YA BREAK IT

speaking from experiance snapped on in the bell housing on a actros really bad day!

cant get to it mate, the axle is in the way even with the wheel off, only option is to get it drilled from the under car side, but cant get the right angle, so needs to be on a ramp really. know any good garages?

Combine do you mean you've rounded the end of the head bolt off? Or do you mean you've ripped the threads out of the axle? What have you grinded - the head so you can pull the shock off, exposing the bolt on the axle?

sorry guys been away for a bit with work etc

basically the bolt has been tightened too much, but wouldnt go in due to it being cross threaded. so the bolt has snapped in half. so half is in the bolt hole, the other half is now in my glove box lol.

i have booked a guy with a heli coil or summat for tomorrow and will let you know how it all goes. joshydee, cheers lad, will let you know.

giles, you almost sold me your bonnet the other day dont really wanna go for a new rear axle :S

Let me know how it goes mate. If that heli coil thing fails it may have to be cut out and a new thread welded back in.

use a smaller drill bit then drill though the center of the bolt.. then from the wheel side.. wind a bolt that will force into the new hole you just made.. winding it out

A Helicoil insert will sort it for you.

The old bolt will be drilled out, then the hole with the damaged thread will be drilled oversize, removing any evidence of the thread.

Then that hole will be tapped for the Helicoil insert to screw into.

The internal thread of the insert will be back to the original spec size. Just a case of getting a new standard bolt then.

On axle stands its a bit of a 2 man job. Ie one to lift the wheel for you, the other underneath to line up the shock and start the bolt.

If you start it on the piss (due to the weight of the axle on the semi started bolt) it'll rip the threads, I'm guessing thats what happened.

Drill down the centre of the bolt and then hammer a torx socket where the centre is the same diameter as the hole but with widers plines than the hole and unscrew is what i always do.

(hope this makes sense)

shouldn't need to faff about with helicoils etc just drill it.

He's cross threaded it, drilling it out will just leave him with a mashed thread. Needs helicoiling to have something to bolt back into...
