Steering rack / track rod end woes 172Cup

I have play in my drivers' side wheel when jacked up, sides not top / bottom. I know this means steering not wheel bearing, however the play cannot be felt in the track rod end so that points to the rack! the steering wheel doesn't move on small movement but the opposite wheel does which again points to the rack or maybe the UJ joints on the steering column. the car has only done 60 thou and its a mk2 172 cup. anyone anymore ideas or had this problem themselves?

dont know if its my fucked tyres or not but any ideas what this is? when I corner hard into a left hander I get a very slight knock come from the drivers side front, the tyres are totally gubbed on the shoulders right now is it that? I dont appear to have play like above.

Nope not that, did the MOT style crowbar lift wheel thing and there's no play in the bottom ball joint.

has anyone got any piccys of the rack so i can have a look at the joints on the rack cos it's reall hard to see anything.

i had to have a rack on my cup @ 45 thou!!!!! not cheap either iirc

under warrenty.......just

It's the connecting rod between the track rod end and the steering rack.

It's another known fault with clio's, cost me £80 i think to have new track rod end and this connecting bar done at renault.

If you jack up the car put on full lock so you have access to the suspect side, reach along the track rod end, past that you will find the connecting bar with a ball joint on the end before it goes into the rack. now get someone to rock the suspect wheel and you should feel play in the ball joint.

IainC yours could be a bent ball joint that is causing positive camber. This would explain the excessive wearing on the shoulder.

But as for you OP it does sound like the steering rack is a bit fooked.

If you do it yourself you are looking at about 4-5 hours, and it isn't hard just awkward as hell.

Just re-read your post. Yes, this is whgere I feel the play, but its inside the gator. Does the gator peel back to expose the faulty item? Can I replace this? Part no?

Yes the ball joint is inside the gaitor........however to replace it you need a special renault tool to hold the internals of the rack and if you were to twist the rack internals it will wreck £400 worth of steering rack. choice is yours, that's why i took mine to renault!!!

how much do renault charge for this delightful service?

mine knocks on accel and braking and also does the same dull knock when turning on spot but only to the left and knocks at same point (just before it hits full lock). feels like something pulling/loose.

80 quid, its in the post above. I haven't got around to booking mine it yet. I need topmounts too.

£80 from renault? yeah actually mine cud be top mounts too but im sure the noise comes from floor rather than up there but u never know

Jack the car up you can feel the play. Also if you squeeze the gator and find the joint and get someone to move the steering or wheel you'll feel the play.

Cv's tick on full lock if it's the outer cv.
both sides have 2.
have you checked the bottom ball joint? jack up car so wheel is inch or so off ground and get a crowbar or similar and lift the wheel up and at the same time look for play in the joint.
try that and let us know.

ive already had that ball joint replaced mate. im sure it driveshaft now, it doesnt click yet but grinds a bit when im on full lock goin up multi storey at work.
seems weird cos i only just had passenger side replaced! ballache
