I took the top dash off my mk1 172 the other week, had been dreading it but it took no time at all, was dead easy. The ph2 I believe just has some more screws by the airbag I think. Fubar has a guide for the ph1, don't think your model is too dissimilar.

yeah watch the passengers side airbag when you take the dash off. there are 4 screws holding it in take those out and all should be fine. do not unplug the airbag tho ;)

i also need to know about putting new wires into the door

Ive been thru the same problems guys. in the end i went for a set of in phase components, for two reasons; if you twist the standard grill off,the in phase tweeters just slot rite in+look factory done.(ill post a pic!) and secondly because of the depth of the speaker, i would of preferred alpine type r's,but they wont fit without hacking the door away!!

Its very much possible (I did it!) to install a set of components/replace tweeters without taking the dash out!!! If you unscrew the tweeter grills, ull find that ur tweeter is offset to the grill quite alot due to the heating ducts.Just pop them out and unclip the plug.It takes a bit to wiggle out,but you can do it. Then cut the plug off the factory wiring(to allow room for your new tweeter). I dont know if all tweeters are made the same in component sets, but mine had the wires already attached to the tweeter. I fed the wires through the dash,(with a bit of help from a metal coat hanger!) I then aimed both wires over towards the passenger footwell. Obviously the right tweeter tooks neat under the steering column, round the back of the head unit and meets with the other. I fixed the cross overs by buying some velcro pads and sticking them onto the highest point i could reach behind the glovebox (to stop passengers kicking them!!) I had to super glue the velcro pad to the bulkhead because it wasnt gripping very well. I used velcro pads, so it would be easy to get at them or take them out if i needed to.

I got round wiring the door quite easily,i didnt take the door panel off.As u know the speaker grill just pops of,so i swapped the speakers round. Then cut into the wiring loom (not the cars, the alpine one!!)at the back of the head unit, then mounted the crossovers right up behind the glovebox. Doning it this way, does away with the need to get your cable from the door,to the car. Its not possible to feed it with the other cables (windows, mirrors etc) because its a form of plug.

Doing it this way gives a much more factory look. Hope this helps

To get the wires into the door is quite simple, take the plug apart and use the space where the existing speaker wires go through. It's always a good idea to upgrade the cable as the standard stuff aint too good, especially if you are spending money on new speakers!

Took the dash off using Fubars guide and replaced them. If it is a phase 2 there will also be another 5? screws to remove it. These are found behind the airbag strips (4 behind the left 1 and I think 1 behind the right one). It then just slides off, it really is a piece of piss to take off/put back on and only takes a couple of mins once you know where all the screws are.
