DFS win 2003 R2 will it solve my problem

right i have a senario and want to know the best solution

we have a server called joker and on there is a share called finance. in that share there is aprox 8000 excel spreadsheets that all link to each other using full paths so \\joker\finance\2007-2008\budget etc etc

the problem we need to move them to a new server and i want it to have a different name !

obviously if i move them now they just dont work as the server has a different name

but with dfs would this allow me to create a namespace of \\joker\finance ? and with that aleviating the problem ?? or is there another way to do it ?

Doesn't DFS use \\domain.whatever\ to access the shares? (Which is then distributed however between the servers)

The links, being hard named, are going to be a swine.
Are you getting rid of Joker completely?

You access it by \\domain.whatever\ so wouldn't work.

If you're getting rid of joker, you could just update the A record to point to the new servers IP? Bit of a bodge, but it would work (providing you are moving everything off of Joker)

itsthe only thing on joker and its 9 years old ! so it needs to move and soon i had thought of tampering with dns but didnt know if it would work :(

yes he was there with batman ,robin and penguin too ;)

now they are pts-Exchange pts-dc1 pts-dc2 etc this is my naming convention not anyone elses now :)
