Breaks squeaking - Help please (Fred / Edde?)

Right, I had some new discs / pads put on about 1500-2000 miles ago. Ever since, there has been a regular (and annoying) "squeak squeak squeak" as the wheels turn. The sound is coming from the front o/s.

The sound does not diminish at speed, it simply speeds up. Neither does it decrease in volume. At very slow speeds (less than 10mph), it sounds more like a creaking. Upon braking from speed it also shudders, which is a bit concerning.

Now it's been taken back twice to the garage who fitted the above. Despite asking them not to, I'm pretty sure they just put copper grease under the pad, which stops the squeaking for probably about 80-100 miles.

Understandably, I can't be arsed to travel 120 miles back to the garage (near my parents') just to have yet more copper grease put behind the pad. I would rather sort it out myself / have it sorted where I am.

Ive got this trouble when i use the breaks it squeeks but there new pads and disks?? I was told by the garage it was the cold and once they heat up it will stop

Doesn't sound the same as mine. They do it irrespective of heat and when squeak when I'm not braking

Strange on, i had this on my zr turned out there was a bit of metal missing from the pad,

You could try giving them a bit of a work out. A few heavy stops from a decent speed to get them nice and hot might help. Could also make them worse!

Copper grease should be put behind the new pads so theres no problem with that. It sounds like one of the disks is warped. You need to take the the wheel off of the promlematic side and have a look for yourself that would be the best place to start imo.

sounds like a caliper is sticking,does it pull to one side when you brake?

Not that I've noticed, but that would kind of make sense with the sound that it makes! If it does I probably instinctively counter it I'll give it a try tomorrow...

Just a case of remounting the caliper shoe then possibly?

just needs stripping down and putting back together,had it on an old saxo and it wouldnt stop squeaking.the above sorted it for me

Cheers fella. What would I need then, just some new caliper pins to put back on afterwards?

dunno whether the 172 has caliper pins,if they are the same as my 1.6 brakes in style then you wont need any pins as the pads wedge in and then they have the anti rattle springs

its dead easy to do I think there is a guide on here somewhere. I still think one of your disks is warped

Yeah I think you're right to be honest Caister. Had a look today and the caliper is fine. Would they let you take a new disk back after a few thousand?
