ITG Panel Filter Vs Carbon Airbox - Which should i fit ?

At the moment i have a ITG Panel Filter in my standard Airbox with a lower grill air feed and a Black 90 degree Samco Bend.

I have came across a Cf Airbox in my shed off of one of my old cars.

Should i fit it ?

Will i gain anything over the setup i have ?

Excuse the K & N Sticker, i just didn't remove it from the airbox when i removed the K & N filter.

The reason i'm wandering if i'll gain anything i because when i had it on my Polo Gti (It was meant to be 125bhp as standard, and with just the Carbon Fibre Airbox and the Decatted Powerflow Stainless steel exhaust sytem it made 138bhp on the rollers)

Not bad increase i thought for a filter and exhaust ;)

probably depends upon whether or not the canister is big enough; stick it on and find out? can't say much more than that

If I was going to do it, I would sell the induction kit from the polo and buy one meant for the 172

I agree with this. Though TBH you will never see mega gains with an induction kit on one of these engines as the stock airbox is pretty good as it is.

I dont really think a kit that was on a 1.6 is going to be up to providing enough flow for a 2.0 unless it was over engineered to begin with. I may be wrong though.

Aren't these filters the same, its just the air feeds/hoses that are different ? :S

I was gonna use my Samco Bend as its the same size ;)

I'd just need new Caf Ducting

Whats everyone else think on this ?

well, if the canister doesn't provide the engine with enough air, it'll obviously affect the power output.

no one is going to be able to confirm that the random airbox you've got in your shed will work or not - you're going to have to fit it to find out or post up detail about its dimensions and those of the inlet/outlet pipes in the hope that someone will compare it with a BMC/Maxogen/Espace/whatever airbox

Ok i will do bud ;)

But i know the o.d (outside diameter) of outlet pipe on the carbon filter has the same i.d (inside diameter) as my Samco hose from K Tec as it slides on airbox a treat(well they aint both the same measurements as the airbox outlet is a ball hair smaller o.d wise to allow hose on), the inlet end i'll size up and post up ;) (i'd have to measure it anyway for CAF Ducting)

I just thought i'd fit it to my 172 and see what happens as that'd be it with the same mods as the Polo ;)

But then i was thinking the Polo must have been running about 130ish bhp standard and not its quoted 125, as a 13bhp gain is a fair bit :S (for just breathing mods)

box looks a bit small to me. Might gain you some torque but i think you will loose at high rpm.

give it a try though, can't hurt !

i think it's nice to try different filter-setups because these are easy and relatively cheap to do

My mate fitted a BMC CDA to his Lupo Gti, same engine as your Polo Gti, and it was a lot smaller than the BMC on mine.
Also, his BMC needed a 70mm CAF, mine needed 80mm.

Whether that will affect performance etc, i dont know, just some info for you to mull over!

Oh, and he rr'd his Lupo and it run 125bhp, bang on book. Guess VAG are better at consistant engine output than Renault. lol.
