bridge channels on a headunit?

  Ph1 172 + Combo van
if you amp your front components could you bridge your headunit into 2 channels instead of four channels and use this to power the rear coaxials in your car. eg. 4x50w headunit bridged to 2x100w just for the rear speakers as the front ones will be amped through the pre amp output.

this possible or am i just being dumb?

No, sorry you can't just dodge it together and see if it works. The amplifier has to be bridge specific. It's due to the way it is made. I've never heard of a HU thats bridgeable, so i have to say chances are slim.

on some headunits it is indeed possible to bridge the speaker outputs....

however i very much doubt yours is capable of it....(think you mention you have a Sony unit somewhere).....

by bridging two channels you effectively halve the impedence and double output....problem is you also double the power required by the amp.....if its not designed to run like this then it will fail pretty quickly....

yeh i thought that you could maybe get headunits which are capable off this i definatly wont be "bodging it" on my system it was just an idea that i though of.

a better idea would be to replace the Sony....(assuming it isn't a pre 2000 model)....

if it says X-plop on it then i would advise selling it on.....

i used to run my alpine 9815 in 3-way mode

so you used all four channels to run just the front comps
