172 pulls left - not tracking or tyres etc

  2118'd Iceberg Ph2 172
Help!

Just got my 172 back from Ren-o-tec £540 lighter in the pocket after having a replacement steering rack fitted (that I supplied) and new engine mounts. There were various complications and he had to drop the subframe in order to do it, hence the price.

Anyway, car feels loads better now, apart from the car still pulls to the left a fair bit, the same amount that it did before!! The tracking was definately done, obviously it would have to be if a new steering rack was fitted. The tyre pressures are all fine, the tyres are all the same depth of wear and make. Really not sure what the next step is....... slightly bent steering column??!!!!!

Any suggestions welcome, it must be narrowed down a fair bit after having the above done.......? :S

Take it back and get them to fix it properly. Especially if you forked out all that money. Did they tell you that you needed a new rack in the first place?

I took it in as the steering felt ropey since I got it a few weeks ago. I knew at least a few steering related issues would be raised, so it made sense when he said it needed a new rack. I then sourced that from a breakers for him and he fitted it. There's no doubt that was faulty as it feels so much better now, however it still veers to the left the same amount as before. I'll give him a call and see what he says.

Are they balanced? Have you checked all the bushes and have you checked if the bottom arm isnt bent?

I paid him to do a comprehensive check of all suspension/steering components, and the steering rack was the only thing in this area he found to be faulty. Very weird.

tbh mate he sounds like a proper crap mechanic. you tell him it pulls to the left, he finds something that "may" be wrong with it, replaces it gives it you back and it still pulls to the left.

surely he test drove it before giving the car back to you?

Take it back mate:)

could be ball joint having excessive play in them?

i had to replace mine for mot and the car doesnt pull to the left now.

although you'd have thought they would have checked that.

I'd get a geometery check carried out to see if everything is in the right place.

I had to pay to get it done on the Megane at Renault, even though it's still under warranty, cost about £160.

Everything is fine and straight, but mine still pulls to the left.

Firstly, I took it to Ren-o-tec on the strength of peoples recommendations on here. Supposed to be good!

Secondly, I didn't take it to him to simply stop it pulling to the left, I took it to him as the overall steering felt ropey and one of the things it was doing was pulling to the left. He checked over everything and found the pas rack was faulty. It now feels a million times better so I'm in no doubt this was a fault, however it still pulls to the left the same amount. And yes it said on the invoice that he test drove it before giving it back to me, so I am confused as to why he didn't mention it.

;id take it back to the garage and wouldnt drive it until its sorted out.
Sounds dangerous tbh!

Its certainly not dangerous, just pulls to the left slightly. More annoying then anything else.

I rang him just now and he said 3 things:

1. It could be something to do with the previous accident the vehicles been in (as I informed him it is a previous cat D repaired).
2. The rear left brake is binding so this could be doing it. This seems unlikely to me but I will certainly have a look.
3. Take it to a specialist to get it 4 wheel aligned.

Hhhmmmmmm...............

Bent chassis...

:quiet:Hope not! Did you buy it pulling to the left?

Yes. To me it feels like many cars often do, I just instantly thought it was tracking. I was also aware it was previous cat D, and did everything you would think of doing, checking boot floors, slam panels, anything obvious with main suspension components etc etc, its all very much in order.

I'll get a 4 wheel alignment done at Mark Fish or somewhere I think, I'm sure they'll tell me exactly whats up.

And if the chassis is bent, what does this mean, it needs to be jigged?

took my car on for tracking the other day as after having a track rod end fitted the steering wheel was pissed.

get the car back and now it feels odd, when you steer to the left sometimes it feels like the car wants to keep going to the left slightly and then it corrects.

feels odd but wondered if the OP had the same feeling or had sorted his?

mine was in a light bump back in july but it only damaged the bonnet etc, besides it was fine till i had the tracking corrected the other day?? :s

cba to read through it all lol, mine used to pull to the laft, have 4 wheel alignment done at 2 places, new tyres when needed....

This Rentech or a different place??? Rentech are supposed to be s**t hot!

does it pull to the right to the same degree if you drive on the other side of the road? (just wondering how much of the problem might be due to the car following the road camber)

No its not my company have not done any engine mounts and we would not remove a sub frame to change mounts.

I'm getting pissed off with other this lately, thats 2 companies that I know of now that have set up with a slight varient on the Rentech name.

Also if anyone has any issues with our work if I'm not contacted, called or e-mailed then how can I do anything about it!

Sorry, just seen this. Not Rentech, but Ren-o-tec. They've been established for 10 years and the guy has 20 years of Renault experience. And the subframe was dropped for the steering rack not the mounts.

When you say pulling to the left do you mean when changing gears, engine braking? Could be worn bush mounts.

Sounds like you should drive your Cat D into a field and set fire to it. Learn from your mistake and move on :p

Really constructive.

The fact it was a cat D will of course make a huge difference to the PAS rack/pump considering the cat D damage was at the rear.
