ATS rear coilover units .

Hi guys, im thinking of getting a set of these to replace my H&Rs at the back as there a tad soft and id like to go lower :D

Anyone done this swap, will i mess the whole setup up ? And does anyone know the front poundage of H&r coilovers.

Think Burp was looking at this, not sure if he went for it though. IIRC he had some stiffer springs made up for the H&R's by powerstation.

Ive tried some stiffer springs from there, and tbh it made it handle gash, don't know why but it felt horrible.

Ps - b****cks :(

they work very well being a true coilover rather than separates with adjustable platforms (the only ones for the clio currently I believe). I dont know about doing just the rears but a whole car set works great. Major benefit over the H&Rs is damping adjustment.

Not a good idea. Spoke to curtis about this in the past. You need the full kit for it to work properly. It will work obviously but not the way it should do.

I had just the rears, the stiffer spring option aswell, I was very impressed with them, used them for 6 days when I went to the ring in sept, did about 1000 mines on them. On the road i was impressed and round the 'ring they were great, my car was probably very unbalanced because i had softer springs up from on LEDA dampers. Got my LEDA's serviced and back on the car now and im really impressed with the quality from the new LEDA. I would consider a full AST setup, maybe with softer springs but untill the LEDA's fail again there staying.

Front? Thats very high?

they are labled 70 newtons,

lbs= newtons x 5.7082 = 399. something.

ASt spring rates that adey and Dan have are (iirc) 450lbs front and 400rear

With the spring on the axle like standard setup the ratio is 2 to 1 so you have the spring rate when compairing to a coilover unit like the ast rear. this is why my rear springs are 800lbs coz they act like 400lbs due to the axle ratio.

Im going up to a 80 newton front spring at some stage to give me the same spring rates as the ones dan and adey have. ie 450lbs front 400lbs rear

Not doubting you fella, just surprised given how H&R's are renowned for the ride quality, that they are running very stiff springs.

800lbs at the rear? I thought yours were more like 500lb at the rear? Whats it like on the road?

800lbs sounds very stiff, I thought Curtis said the motion ratio was 3 to 1 for the normal rear set up

The reason why i am running such high spring rates is because i wanted a setup that was better on the track but still good on the road. Yes 450lb front and 400lb rear is quite high but the spring rates on the rear cant in any way be compared to any other coilover spring rates on any clio as the rears are a coilover and not a barrel type spring. I orignally tested these spring rates at the nurburging after doing a trackday on the spring rates which came on the shocks originally. (280lb front and 250lb rear)
I decided that the car rolled around too much on the softer spring rates and the dampers had to be on the hardest setting to make the car feel somewhere near how i wanted it to.
I knew the suspension and setup had so much more to give so i went back to curtis to explain my findings.
He recommended that i tried something significantly different to see how far we could go until the car became completely useless on the road.
As i said above i took the car to the nurburgring and was absolutely astonished by how much different and how planted the car felt on the stiffer springs. The turn in was much better and more precise, the roll and initial dive on turn in which i had experienced had gone and the car all in all felt 110% better.
The only downside is that the ride is hard on the road which is exactly why powerstation offers the two quite different spring rates.
The stiffer setup is also much better if you are planning on running 888's or such like either on track or for road use.
The choice is yours :)

400lb rear on the AST'S. Definately.

i know its 400lb on the AST's thats what i got with mine,

Jay got new race springs for his H&R's, im interested to know what lb's they are and how they are on the road ??

If your going to use the car on the road 99% of the time or all the time then go for the softer setup. More compliant and more comfortable but if your a man then have the stiff stuff :)

I gave curtis the measurements he asked me for and he worked it out at 2 to 1.

is fine on the road, turns in lovely, very harsh over speed bumps tho. But thats not what concerns me, the on track manner has improved, to the point where i need it a little stiffer at the front.

I think all this disscusion about suspensions etups is interesting but its all down to what an individual prefers and their driving style.

Tony Hunter drove mine at Oulton and said it was much better but i bet robby would hate it if he drove it

Hmm, still tempted to buy just rears as i cant see why they wouldnt be able to made to match the front H&R setup with there adjustability..?

sell them and do it properly :) tight ar*e lol You need the front as they are adjusable and urs arent

rears were just over £500 but might be cheaper if u can get them as part of the group buy. Might aswell buy the full set up and some soild top mounts. get it set up properly and it will be miles better than H&R set up
