Modifying my non sport Clio

  Renault Clio
I'd really like some help on how to modify my black non sport Clio. I'm not looking to go wild with spoilers or anything like that. I'm going to have the rear windows tinted, I'll be buying some nice alloy wheels soon (probably black) and anything else will just be attention to detail I suppose.

I want to paint the front diamond badge black, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Is it simply just spraying the badge? If so what kind of paint do I need to buy? Help with this would be appreciated ASAP because I'm on my way to Halfords soon. Also, stupid question but how do you spray the badge without spraying the bonnet and making a mess?

I'm thinking about spraying the door badges but I haven't made a decision yet. What colour/s would you advise?

I want to paint the calipers too. Is that just a case of taking the wheel off and painting them? If so what kind of paint do you need? I'm thinking about red but I'm open to suggestions.

What's the cheapest price for a RS grill? I want one but I don't really want to pay a lot of money for it.

Any other little modification suggestions would really be appreciated, I'll post pictures of my Clio as it is at the moment (it's really just a standard black Clio at the moment) soon.

Thanks

Go for some smart alloys, Turnis are a popular choice, Some respray the origional alloys in a darker colour.. Like black or anthracite.

Front diamond pulls off, Can be sanded lightly then primered, sprayed and laquered. Halfords paint will be fine. I sprayed mine renault pearlecent, Same colour as my paintwork.

Rear diamond has to be accessed from the inside of the boot lit, Unbolts and can be popped out after the plastic glue is taken off.

There are some people on here that can colour code your bullets to a good standard. Can be done yourself, But the writing is hard to paint.

I want to paint the calipers too. Is that just a case of taking the wheel off and painting them? If so what kind of paint do you need? I'm thinking about red but I'm open to suggestions.

Callipers can be painted with high temp calliper paint, But most (including me) go for Hammerite smooth. I did mine black and a year later they still look smart.

Best little mods are, Turning the orange indicator bulbs; front and back. To silvertecs. The bulbs look silver, But shine orange when lit so take away the orange look to the headlights.

Aerial, RS Grille etc. Have a look around and at some old threads.

Thanks

That paint should be fine mate, used it on mine came out a treat
If you want to learn how to spray things and do other things with your car, pay the £10 and become a full member, plenty of good guides how to lower your car etc etc etc.
You will also be able to buy things out of the for sale section, most things are a lot cheaper there and 99% clio related

Thanks for confirming that the paint will work :) I probably will become a full member soon. This forum is really helpful. I'm going to clean the calipers tomorrow hopefully and then I'll probably buy the paint on Sunday. I'm going to post pictures of all of my results as well as the car as it is at the moment.

Does anyone have any idea of how much it costs to paint the diamond black?

  Clio 1.4 16v Dymanique
it ill cost what ever the paint is mate, £8 or so for a can of grey primer probs, then another £8 or so for the selected paint eg, black gloss, then £8 or so for the laceur.. (cant spell)!!

can you post pics of how the caliper comes out up close ones (with wheel off) and then when wheel is back on, thinking of doing it myself..

Cheers Mate

Hope that helps!

I'm thinking of leaving the diamond badge, for now anyway. I don't want to do it when I'm unsure.

Sure, I'll post pics!

^ ye preety easy, just take your time :) they go between £30-£45, have a look on ebay is your best bet.

  Renault Clio
My first task is to paint the calipers red, I'll be doing that tomorrow hopefully.

Does anyone have any suggestions for other additions?

  Renault Clio
I've decided to go with yellow for the calipers. I'll be doing it either tonight or tomorrow. I'll be sure to post pictures!

At the moment I really need the following things, so if anyone is willing to make me them or is currently selling them... let me know your price.

- 16v bullets, I haven't decided what colour/s yet so show me what you've got or what you're capable of doing please.
- Diamond painted black. It doesn't have to be black, it could be graphite. Just as long as it's dark, I don't mind. Let me know.
- RS Grill.

You'll need to get an RS grille from Renault, it's the cheapest/usually the only place selling them. As for the diamonds, you can spray those yourself if you follow a guide on here. :)

I see. I've looked at the guide. The only bit I'm not sure about is the sanding, I'm really worried about doing that. Does it have to be done?

I take it this is the primer...

and this is the lacquer...

Right?

It has to be done to roughen up the surface. It doesn't have to be done excessovely, just using the wet and dry paper stated. You'll be covering it with paint anyway! :rasp:

They are the right sprays yes matey.

Haha I just PMd you thinking you hadn't seen my reply in this topic, sorry. Thanks for the help, if you could answer my question in the PM that would be great.

I want to get my bullets looking like this. All one colour. Silver, it looks like it has some sort of effect on it, or is it just metallic? Does anyone know what kind of paint I would need? If you could show me a link on Halfords' website that would be great. Can they just be sprayed or do you have to sand, prime, spray and lacquer? If so is it the same procedure as the diamond with the same products?

Same procedure with all painting mate. That's just done using some type of silver available from Halfrauds.

Yes, same reasons as the badges. The paint won't key to it otherwise! The sanding disappears when you apply the primer and paint anyway :rasp:

Could have asked me, I sprayed them!

What I did was:

Degreased, sanded down with 600grit wet n dry, plastic primered, sanded 1200grit, primered again, sanded 1200grit, painted, sanded 1200grit, painted again, then today I put on 3 coats of lacquer

Leave 24hr between the primer, paint and lacquer sections

I used halfords own plastic primer (in grey), aluminium paint and clear lacquer

  Renault Clio
got any pictures of how it is now mate

I will have tomorrow. I only posted this topic yesterday. Tomorrow I'll be adding the black diamond that I should finish tonight. I went with Renault Pearlescent Black paint, it matches the rest of the car. I'll be using that paint to touch up a few areas on the car tomorrow too. Then I'll give the car a good clean and polish. Finally I'll be degreasing the calipers and painting them yellow. I'll try and post "before" pictures if I remember but it's not really essential. You can image what a standard black Clio looks like! ;)

I see. I'm worried about sanding the bullets, won't it ruin the writing, if you know what I mean? Is there a lighter shade than aluminium?

The diamond is going amazingly well, I'm really shocked that I've actually done it! It couldn't be any better right now.

I've just finished the 2nd coat of paint, I'm going to leave it to try for 2 hours or so and then apply the clear lacquer. In the guide it says that you should apply 2 coats of lacquer and that after the 2nd coat you should wait a few days for it to "cure". Is that necessary? Could I not leave it to "cure" from about midnight tonight untill about 13:00 tomorrow afternoon? Would that be fine?

the more time you take the better the finish.. i normally prime one day...top coat the next then lacquer the next day then leave at least 3-4 days to harden before polishing/waxing ..

3-4 days :( I guess impatience isn't a great quality to have in these circumstances.

i'm same mate i was impatient when i refurbed my wheels but it paid off waiting for it to be a proper warm day before lacquering..the more time and effort you put in the better the results. :)

i've found i can bake my smaller stuff like bullets and gearknob insert etc n stuff in my snakes 4 foot vivarium its almost 100 degrees..finish looks gorgeous when baked and hardens brilliant ,i'm sure he'd be p1ssed if i tried to put a painted alloy wheel in with him tho :p

So it wouldn't be ok if I left it to "cure" from midnight tonight until 13:00 tomorrow afternoon? Are you sure?

if its still soft and you press on it hard to clip the diamond back in your gonna end up with finger print impressions and you'll be gutted you couldnt wait a day or so longer..it may be ok buddy just giving my opinon..

Did you find that the pearl black paint from Halfrauds is quite glittery in comparison to the one Renault use?

Where can you get silver paint from? I mean silver as is in gris boreal silver?
Gris borael is a pain in the arse to match, even for bodyshops! But, try www.auto-paint.co.uk

Alright, other opinions on this would also be appreciated :)
Depends, I just sprayed mine and let it become touch dry, laquered it and when that was dry I just bashed it back on. As long as you don't do stupidly thick coats then it'll be reet!

Can't say I've noticed, I haven't used it for the touch ups yet. I hope it's the same though :dapprove:

I like the sound of this advice  3-4 days is a long time. We've had great weather today though so it's unlikely that it will rain, but if it does will it hurt anything? Also what about washing the car? Should I wait a few days before cleaning the car (because it would wet the badges/diamond)?

Progress

I painted the calipers. I have to say I'm really disappointed, I painted them yellow and it just looks really sloppy. I'll be spraying them black tomorrow :(

I nearly ruined the diamond about 3 times yesterday by rushing, but I managed to saved it and I've took my time today and it's going well. Just waiting for the last coat of lacquer to dry.

The bullets were really easy to do, I've sprayed them Renault Iceburg Silver. I'm waiting for the first coat of lacquer to dry on those. I'm really please with them.

I've ordered a decal from Ady182 and that should be here next week, hopefully I'm making the right decision by sticking it on the bonnet.

Should be getting the windows tinted soon too, I've just got to phone the place up.

Time for some pictures!

As you can see when you get close up it looks really bad. I can't believe I did it! Oh well, they'll be black tomorrow hopefully.

Here are bullets, they turned out really well. They still need a final layer of lacquer though.

Here's the diamond with the bullets. It looks better in real life than on the picture. The picture doesn't really do it justice.

I haven't decided when I'm going to but the bullets and the diamond onto the car, it will be either tonight or tomorrow. I'll post pictures when I have :)
