Basic mods?

Hi im going to buy my 172 on monday and cannot wait to get hold of it. Ive had fast cars but crave a hot hatch again as they are just so easy to tinker with. Myfirst job will be to strip the rear seats out to lose weight but am just wondering what are the best mods to gain hp as i dont want to waste my money on just any w**k filter etc.

My little beast will be going in a project thread once i get her so all you help is welcomed.

Want around 180-190 bhp really and will have roughly 200quid a month to spend on her.

dont forget cams, just get it real light to get power to weight ratio, that does help and if you have a spare £2500 under the sofa.......

Don't really bother with an exhaust and filter unless you want a bit more noise.


You're buying the wrong car if you want to tune, optimisticly you might get 10 hp from matched inlet manifold, panel filter and decat, but remember they very rarely make the standard 169 horsepower, normally 150-160.

Play on the clio's assets, good coilovers and tyres are money well spent. Either that or ITB / low boost turbo.

Never new this got me seriously re-considering now. As I get get a zetec-s for this money with around 150 bhp? Hmm What do you mean by serious money? Why are they called 172 if they only produce 169bhp?

I'd strip it and get the brakes up-graded, and some coilovers fitted first.

basic mods and cams = waste of money, would cost the same to just throttle body the car and you have better mpg, more power all over, more torque blah blah blah. Can then do the basics after

silly question but what are throttle boddies? How much are throttle bodies? Do they put more strain on the engine? Where can i get them?

Could swear K-Tec site states for £250 a remap can give you somewhere in the region of 10+.

Not fussed though as I'm not planning on getting one.

i like my auto lights but the wipers drive me insane !!!! i really would rather have just an intermittent setting . they just seem to do what ever they like, some days they are over sensitive other days v under sensitive , i have even changed the sensor with new 1 from Renault not much change.

I am after basic mods as well , i think people are correct when looking at tb's in terms of money spent for gains, but i like to keep my original ecu and trip computer. Id save your money for a bit , and see what is going happen with this super 2000 inlets system that is being developed by angleworks. could be good value for money as looks to offer an entire intake system solution, and prob go well with cams.

Last i heard from matt they have developed it using 428 cat cams. so it will be a inlet + cam package.
